First things first! It is November, and thus time for NaNoWriMo. I'm trying to get back into the habit of writing, so if anyone's still here, give me a fandom, character or pairing, and three words. I might write a sentence, I might write a paragraph, or I might find a picture or gif that's appropriate. Yes? OK.

The rest:

:( I'm still looking for a job.

:) I went to a Chicago Wolves/Rockford IceHogs game! It was odd. Because the Wolves were the home team, but the Hogs are the bb!Blackhawks, and they're so close to home that the audience was pretty evenly split. The lady next to me is a season ticketholder, but she was utterly clueless, because she kept saying that she didn't recognize any of the names of the players or their faces, and she didn't know what was going on. Um. The team that was the Chicago Wolves last year was the affiliate of the Canucks, and is now in Utica. This team is St Louis's AHL affiliate, and they were the Peoria Rivermen last year. So yeah, none of these dudes SHOULD be people she recognizes. But I just nodded and ignored her. And waved to Michael Davies (tiny forward is tiny), former Badger, who saw Aaron's UW sweater and came over to give us a nod.

:)) FRANK TURNER. Cool venue, great show.

:))) Tabby will be in the Chicagoland area soon. And Butch Walker is playing at the House of Blues next week.

I put a bunch of stuff up on craigslist, but if anyone here wants a table and 4 chairs, some bar stools, a butcher-block, or random band memorabilia (MCR Day of the Dead mask, signed and unsigned posters, etc), let me know. I really just want this stuff to stop cluttering our space.

I think that's pretty much it at the moment.

I have opinions about the news that's in the headlines, but all I'm going to say is that I hope that everyone who lost a loved one on 9/11/01 or when the USS Cole or the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya were bombed feels some closure. I'd like to believe that this means we'll extract ourselves from the untenable, unsustainable military conflicts in which we embroiled ourselves in the name of capturing OBL, but I have sincere doubts on that subject.

IN HAPPIER NEWS. [livejournal.com profile] pjvilar posted a picture that makes me FINALLY feel the urge to write, for the first time in months. If I can squeeze it in around my work hours, which have once again grown to encompass far more than the 40 for which I am paid.

AND. Seriously, did we magick Panic! At The Disco into being with our will, bandom? Because this video. SERIOUSLY. It's a half-dozen different musicals and Disney movies for a single 3-minute song, and I LOVE IT. I cannot wait for June. Or for the autumn tour with Black Cards and Neon Trees.

What was I saying about getting through the grant-related experiments and getting back to my own project?

What I meant to say is: it is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.

A competitor published a paper on one of the post-docs' projects. Fuuuuuuuuck. Which is shitty, but it happens; that's the way academic science moves forward. We can work around it. But since this competitor has a bigger lab, more funding, and a history and experience on the project that Student has been navigating ever so slowly, we REALLY need to get his crap together.

Which means that in addition to grant-related experiments, I am going to be doing a slew of some experiments that he hasn't been able to get to work for Student's project in order to get it out as soon as humanly possible assuming he doesn't fuck off for another month-long vacation.

(In happier news, I wrote two drabbles last night, and spent yesterday with girl!Brad/Nate porn playing merrily in my head, so perhaps I'm exiting the Death Valley of Writing Inspiration I've been occupying since the holidays.)

I have spent the last hour mentally debating whether Nate in the college AU went to the Gilman School or Calvert Hall before heading off to Dartmouth.

This Nate's family lives in Roland Park. And Gilman is in Roland Park. And those are two of the schools that anyone who is anyone in the legal profession in the Balmer area might've attended. [Baltimore is clannish, okay? J and I had this discussion the other day about how when a banker or lawyer in Baltimore asks where you went to school, they're not asking about college - if you're from there, and practice there, they want to know if you went to Gilman or Calvert Hall or the Boys' Latin School.]

a) This is not my [livejournal.com profile] yagkyas fic.

b) This is not the Walt/Brad ficlet that needs to be transcribed.

c) WTAF, brain? Why are you focusing on minutiae when the bulk has yet to be written?

Nonplussed does not mean the same thing as nonchalant. Using it in a place where you're describing someone or something as cool, collected, or casual makes no sense whatsoever, since it means perplexed, confused, or puzzled.

Check a dictionary if you're using a word in a fic that you've never used in actual conversation, please?

First? HFD was collecting donations at intersections on my way to work this AM, so I gave them the leftover $ from my Sbx run. Then I was sitting, waiting for the light to turn, and the firefighter knocked on my window, and wanted to know about my ink. I blocked traffic when the left turn signal went green b/c we were still talking. *facepalm* But now I'm thinking about the firefighter/EMT AU. *sigh* I wish I followed through more consistently when it comes to writing.

Second? On the subject of writing and follow-through. Someone needs to tell me either to NOT sign up for [livejournal.com profile] warbigbang or to volunteer to poke me every week to write a thousand words. ExpandBecause the world needs more GK AUs, right? )

Yeah, so that's going on in my head. I still have thoughts about American Idiot that I haven't completely written out, and other stuff stewing.

Third? Um, thanks for listing all the original Northern Downpour members in the back of the Discos' calendar, Artist Arena. Really.

But I hope y'all are having a decent weekend. ♥

+ I claimed a prompt for [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine! At first I was thinking that I'd write a ficlet in a 'verse I've already written in, but I sorta want to write something different. We'll see. I'll probably bug some of you via gmail about it.

+ I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang again this year. Hopefully this time I'll actually finish the fic, since the people involved cannot disillusion me via Twitter. Plus, already outlined. Hopefully I'll keep motivated to get it all finished this time instead of letting it peter out into 5000 words of unfinished fic + an outline, like last year's.

+ [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey and [livejournal.com profile] wordsalone are responsible for my new fascination: Generation Kill. It is the most sexist, racist, politically incorrect thing I've ever seen, and it hurts to watch the stupidity sometimes, but I can't look away. I've got three episodes left to watch. Then I maybe might look for some fanfic of the Brad/Nate or Brad/Ray (they are so so married) persuasion.

+ Ugh. Do not corner me in my office and bombard me with demands before I even have my coat off on Monday morning. I usually need the first hour of the day on Monday morning to plan the week's experiments, and if you bug me, I'm pretty much guaranteed to be as unhelpful as possible. Wait an hour and you're infinitely more likely to find me amenable to your demands.

+ OMG, I *hurt* from laughing at this: Nissan Pavilion has been renamed Jiffy Lube Live. If there is a god, Gabe Saporta (and other bandom folks) will perform there this year and make ridiculous fandom-related jokes about the venue's name.

So here, FIC!

Brendon/Ian || ~950 words || teen

fake, as in not real and never happened
Set around the time Ian auditioned to join The Cab? IDK, the IMs started like this: you know that Ian crashed with Bden & Shane, b/c Shane has family obligations, he has to let him. And Shane's busy with work, so it's up to Bden to keep him entertained.

*hands*

Anyway. Here are snippets from two of the WIPs on my laptop. Tell me which I should work on.

Expandnot-skeezy-Gabe, would have been my BigBang fic )

ExpandOr untitled Brendon/Spencer fic )

There are bunches more unfinished fics - biting fic? Criminal Minds/bandom cross-over? Weasley twin/Harry potions incident? Jensen Ackles/Chris Kane porn? All just waiting for me to get inspired and finish them.

Tell me which you'd like to read.

+ I've never been interested in Heroes, but I started watching it (yay for streaming via Netflix and Xbox 360) last night. It's all Zachary Quinto's fault. ExpandDamn you, Spock! )

+ To say that imaging is not my favorite type of experiment would be an understatement. I spent this morning in the most boring training seminar ever (seriously, does anyone LEARN when some talks at them and points and clicks? give me a manual and let me try it for myself, okay?) so that I could have access to the department's shiny new Nikon confocal microscope. It is a thing of beauty. Completely fucking state of the art, tunable laser sources, options for manual or automated focusing, perfusion chamber for live cell imaging over extended periods of time, capable of doing Z-stacks and time-points on multiple different x/y coordinates.

Shiny, even for someone like me, who has been traumatized by microscopy (my freshman-year Cell Bio lab is to blame for many terrible memories) and hates staring down a 'scope all day.

+ Someone (who understands how very bad I am when it comes to controlling my music-related purchases) should persuade me not to download the Shazam app to my iPhone.

+ I don't know what to have for supper. Perhaps I should just drink more wine and go back to watching Heroes?

+ Where has my ability to write porn gone? Seriously, I look at what I've written (which is a (now) late birthday gift) and hate it too much to even edit it.

Dear GabrielSaporta, Y'all making fart sounds to your stickam and then sending it to Rolling Stone? Does not really count as a preview to your new album. I hope. In any case, don't waste my time with bullshit. I'd rather you just said it was you fucking around than telling us to go listen to one of our new songs, 'kay?

Tomorrow night? Scout Bar? Sing It Loud & The Morning Light with some other dudes. Doors are at 7pm. Tickets are $10 at the door. I'm leaving directly from work, so if anyone needs a lift from the med center/downtown, lemme know.

I have resigned myself to not making the [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang deadline. Should I even bother continuing?

*sigh*

No new TDS/TCR this week. Tragic.

But. APRIL IS ALMOST HERE! AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS, DON'T YOU? TAAAAABBY!

Last night [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not reminded me about the vampire!Jon fic that's sitting unfinished.

It's languishing partly because I'm a slacker, but also because it was originally started as a back-and-forth comment fic, and the POV switches between Brendon and Jon.

Now, personally? I hate back and forth POVs within a scene. It's okay if it's a clearly marked, between-scene change, but I find it off-putting to read one paragraph in one person's head, and then the next paragraph is someone else's POV.

But if I put all the fic in one POV, I lose some details. Or more dialogue has to be added, something has to be done to get the reader to see the other character's POV without actually, you know, head-skipping.

Then it occurred to me: maybe I'm just anal about this. Thus, A POLL! (Well, also because I was in the mood for some ticky-boxes.)

I have a question/favor to ask y'all. Just because I have a hard time seeing anything but stuff I want to change when I look at it.

Go back and look at the splinch-swap smut that was my first real attempt at fanfic.

Then look at Testing, a more recent offering from the same fandom, and at I'll just pretend, written in a separate fandom, but within the last month.

Has my writing style changed? Do you think it's just because of the fandom/characters involved? Am I losing my own writing style, allowing myself to be too influenced by spoken word and other authors?

I'm reading The Audience As Editor in Fan Fiction and Fan Communities in the Age of the Internet right now, and this bit caught my eye:

[...]beta reading represents a further refutation of the idea that individuals or groups can claim sole intellectual ownership over the texts and images that combine to form a shared frame of reference for a diverse and international community.

So as cheerleaders, aides, and editors, we are turning storytelling back into a folkloric, community-owned endeavor?

Gotta think about this.

Opinions?

And I'm headed straight for it.

Because I have a Wincest drabble to post for Sam Winchester's birthday, some J2/Wincest... stuff (I'm not sure what genre name to use: not porn, not fluff, not quite drama but a wee bit of angst -- oh, Dean) that's half-written, and hockey slash that will need a beta shortly.

So. To the point.

Fangirl alert: Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver are on the Today Show promoting Snow Cake this morning. It's finally being released to theaters here in the States.

If I've got beta stuff for people, it should be in your mailbox sometime today/tonight/Sunday.

[livejournal.com profile] topaz7, I've got a little ficlet starring Roberto Luongo scribbled. I don't know if I can do the big plotty piece, though. I tried slashing Martin Brodeur, but he is unapologetically straight in my head (I keep seeing him with Genevieve as shown by shots of her in the stands, all made up and perky, boobs bouncing in tight t-shirts) so I had to go with Markus Naslund instead.

[livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not, you are evil. E. VOL. "You said I could have anything I wanted for my birthday, Dean."
