+ I was very sad that [personal profile] shutyourface didn't get to come - there were tickets left last week! they only just moved it from the Studio to the Ballroom on Friday! how did it sell out so fast?!? In any case, I met up with Overairwaves, had some nachos and drinks. Forgot: Lucky's does $2 happy hour rail drinks. :D :D :D Sober by the time I need to drive home. Chatted with RockMom (she's awesome) before heading into the Studio for happy hour, glomming onto some folks we were chatting with about shows in line even though we hadn't actually been IN the line at that point. Eh, DNW barrier particularly, just didn't want to be in the rain, and wanted to hang out at the bar instead of outside. (As an aside, I think the the pre-show happy hour is sort of pointless as a money-maker when they swing the line of teenies in to block access to the bar. I'd guess that 95% of the people waiting there for "happy hour" didn't actually buy any drinks, not even a soft-drink.)

+ Opening act. Violin, keyboard, acoustic guitar, accordion, xylophone, keyboard between three people. SOLD! (The violinist/keyboardist initially reminded me of Greta Salpeter/Morgan, but only in hair & manner, not actually like her facially upon closer inspection.) Sort of folk-y. Avalanche City. Their new EP is out, but they didn't have any at the venue, so. It's on iTunes, but I prefer to give them my money via tickets and the merch booth.

+ Random notes from the show: Nate judges you SO HARD if you don't know his lyrics. His vocals sound better live than on the album, where they are sort of bland and leveled out by autotune. Jack's guitar is awesome live. TRUMPET. Apparently the HTx show was the biggest headlining show they'd played to date? I thought it was a good crowd - sold out, but not as over-sold and packed as the Chris Cornell show there a couple of years ago, or the Silver Sun Pick Ups last year. The crowd seemed split between people who only knew We Are Young and fans who knew all the lyrics.

+ Track-by-track )

+ I went to the Flying Saucer tonight b/c I didn't feel like cooking for myself (A is in Austin on business), and had New Belgium's Cocoa Mole Lips of Faith beer. IT IS DELICIOUS. Cocoa nib flavor without being the chocolaty-type flavor that you get in Young's Chocolate Stout, spicy but subtly so, so that you notice it more as you finish the pint rather than up front. Also, Clown Shoes' Vampire Slayer Stout. Not spicy, just a nice, malty stout, not as much body as some, but definitely superior to St. Arnold's Winter Stout, even when the latter is on cask.

+ Dante is chirping at me, and I need to do some laundry and some dishes, and change out the litter pan completely, so I suppose that is all for the night.

+ I'm watching the Fiesta Bowl. I don't have strong feelings about who to cheer for, but I feel like Boise St. has gotten fucked by the BCS and larger conferences, since they've tried to strengthen their schedule by advertising that they will pay to come to any of the top-conference schools, and all those schools decline. Because if Boise St. plays them and beats them (the way they shellacked Oklahoma a couple of years ago), maybe there's some validity to the argument that the BCS is all about money and TV rights, not so much about what team is actually the best. If it were, there'd be a playoff system, and the team that wins this game and the winner of the Texas/Alabama (which I mostly want the Tide to roll, simply because I'm contrary) game would play each other.

+ Urgh, work. It's always hard to go back after a week off. But I suppose today could have been worse.

+ [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine is open for prompts and for writers and artists to volunteer. Go check it out!

+ Do I care enough about The Cab and Hey Monday to buy presale tickets for the spring AP Tour? (Because I definitely do not care enough about Never Shout Never.)

+ Sandy is the contrariest cat ever. Dante was curled up at my feet on the sofa, and she deliberately pounced from her spot on Aaron's lap (over in his LaZBoy) onto Dante, just to make him roll over and yowl and abandon the sofa. Seriously: bitch. As soon as he was up, she hopped back over to Aaron.

+ Why is Jonathan Rhys Meyers hurting me by forcing me to watch John Travolta on-screen with him in From Paris, With Love? No, really, WHY? *toddles off to watch Velvet Goldmine*

First, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] inkandchaos, [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey, [livejournal.com profile] xingou, and the anons who sent me snowflakes! ♥

Second, someone needs to tell me to save money (and don't freeze my ass off) and not go to Chicago/Urbana to see Empires and Gold Motel at the end of January.

Third, meme-ishness.

Day 01 → My favorite song
Day 02 → My favorite movie
Day 03 → My favorite television program
Day 04 → My favorite book
Day 05 → My favorite quote
Day 06 → Whatever strikes my fancy
Day 07 → A photo that makes me happy

What photo(s) made me happy today? )

M'kay. Now I'm gonna go look over something [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not sent, then read some Gabe/William fic.

Have a good evening, y'all.

And remember, midnight CST, BANG. :)

~ The Revolting Cocks are touring with Blownload? There's a joke there, I'm sure of it.

~ JWalk just made me ♥_♥ at him for the first time in a long while.

~ Gabe has his own clothing line too? IDEK what to say. Except that I hope it doesn't include purple hoodies and other day-glo attire.

~ I know this isn't news: Ticketmaster is such a rip-off. Fuck you, no, I'm not paying $10 in fees on a $15 ticket. I'll pick it up from the box office when I'm in the vicinity for some other show reason.

~ \o/ Angels! (Even if I missed House b/c of scheduling conflicts with your epic game.)

~ I would like work-related people to stop following me on Twitter. It makes it awkward when I bitch about work problems.

Sandy is perched on the back of the sofa right behind me, and she's grooming. The wet sound of her tongue against her fur makes me shudder. WHY CAN'T SHE GO DO THAT ELSEWHERE? Like, seriously, ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE HOUSE!

  • *facepalm* I might be considering going to Atlanta to see Green Day the first weekend in August. I'll miss them when they're in TX/LA, and there's no other weekend date that I can manage. Plus, it's [livejournal.com profile] inkandchaos's birthday that weekend, so we could hang out. Do I need to see Green Day on this tour?

  • Sometimes sports metaphors make no sense. When there's a runner on 1st and 3rd and baseball commentators say there are "runners on the corners" I don't get it. It's a DIAMOND. EVERY BASE IS A CORNER.

  • And to complete my rantiness, a science rant: I'm reading Twinkie, Deconstructed right now.The chapter about enriched cake flour (#1 ingredient of Twinkies) explains the enrichment process, including the addition of iron to prevent anemia. There are two sources: ferrous sulfate and "reduced iron". But the reduced iron the author talks about is "food-quality iron that has been reacted with carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen to get ferric oxide". I get that while the CO is present, there's probably pi-bonding to the iron that makes its electronic state not "look" like it's ferric. But ferric oxide? NOT REDUCED. In this case, the iron has one less electron than it has in ferrous sulfate.

  • Bird wings are fluttering in the chimney. Sandy is camped out in front of the fireplace, waiting for a meal. She's ridiculous.

  • Why don't I have any Veruca Salt in my iTunes library? This must be corrected.

  • Electric Touch tomorrow at Warehouse Live. Y/Y? It's been WEEKS since I had live music in my ears. Must go.

+ Does anyone else feel like the Northern Downpour t-shirt is way bigger than it should be, even though the tag says it's the right size? Also, the magnet set does not include enough articles. :( Need to get another poetry kit to go with it.

+ Yesterday was our 7th anniversary. I'm not sure what it says about us that in lieu of exchanging gifts, MrIris and I had tapas and wine at Mi Luna, and we're really celebrating by camping and rocking out this weekend @ Bonnaroo. (ELVIS COSTELLOOOOOOOO. *cough* Wot?)

+ Dude. That Nerf Herder album rocks. It's got Mr. Spock on it. Star Wars and Star Trek on the same album FTW.

+ Have I asked this before? Am I the only person who thinks that the opening of Hey Monday's Homecoming is ripped directly from The Bangles' cover of Hazy Shade of Winter?

+ Rise Against's Hero of War is the iTunes video of the week. ♥ ♥ ♥ That means it is free, so go download it. And then buy the album because Tim McIlrath et al. are awesome. (How many days until they are HEEEEEERRRRRE?)

+ I am still traumatized by trying to get the bird who flew down the chimney out of the house before the cats could eat it. They, on the other hand, have refused to budge from the fireplace, clearly in hopes that another feathered meal will fall from the heavens.

I am feeling quite smug, almost insufferably so according to MrIris, and am likely to remain so for days. Why? Because I have BuzzFest tickets. (Yes, I know, I said so before. You're gonna get tired of seeing my squeeing. Fair warning.) And the show is sold out. Oh, yes, all 14k tickets gone in less than 24 hours one hour.

I am resisting the urge to pet the print-outs and hiss, "My preshusssss." But it's so very difficult, especially when I keep hearing the DJs tell listeners that the only way to get tickets is to win them, and to stop hanging out on the phone lines, because they clear them before each give-away.

New tattoo. AWAKE on the front of my forearm. When it heals, I might go back and get AWARE or BREATHE on the back.

Othello this afternoon. One of my least favorites of Shakespeare's works. I just… I get that Othello's been unaffected by love in the past, and that's why the loving not wisely but too well thing comes in, but please. He's a leader of men, has been, and he just takes Iago's word on everything? As a plot, it's got holes you could drive a semi through. Just, no.

But the set design was pretty awesome, and I really liked the juxtaposition of the modern industrial setting with the traditional costumes. And the lighting, especially in the last scene, in the bedroom.

Our cats are the weirdest kitties ever. We had leftover sushi and sashimi, so we brought it home. We cut up small pieces and offered it to the flealines, and they sniffed at it, then curled up in our laps. WHAT CATS DON'T LIKE TUNA? Especially sushi-grade tuna?

All-righty then. M'gonna go write the thing I've been meaning to write since, oh, Christmas.

How's everyone this fine evening?

I'd say it'll cheer you up, but given the nature of the crossover, you'll see that that's maybe not an accurate statement.

Omega by [livejournal.com profile] vorpalblades
SPN/I Am Legend crossover
spoilers for all of S2 of SPN, death!fic
gen, PG13

Sam and Dean are brothers to the end.

Also? My cats have figured out how to open the kitchen cupboards. They particularly like to climb into the one that holds serving dishes and platters. They hide in there and wait for someone to walk by, then leap out in a cat-ambush.

And my new iPod Touch is the shiniest, prettiest piece of technology ever. MrIris indulges me shamelessly. (eta: I listen to it all day at work, and it holds charge. YAY!)
