+ Bush. Reliving my university years, musically. Still, the bassline to Come Down will always make me pause to listen.

+ People watching at BuzzFest XXX. Worth the price of admission.

- My knee is swollen and my calf is super tight. Ugh. Maybe I'll do something lower impact this afternoon.

+ The Aeros made the playoffs! They need to win tonight and the Checkers to lose if they want home-ice for the first round (doubtful), but whatever. Playoffs for their last season in Houston!

+ Mostly cleaned up the coffeeshop AU, so that might be posted soon?

+ [personal profile] why_me_why_not is the best. Last night I texted her I need someone to tell the story of Jeff Skinner, Secret Romantic. His favorite book is essentially an adventure/romance! The rest of the guys laugh about him taking dates to see chick flicks, but he actually doesn't mind? (Also, he gets laid a lot because ladies think he's sweet and sensitive on top of being a hot young athlete, so he wins all the way around. And, predictably, we spewed ideas at each other on the topic until long past we both should have been asleep.

+ Rafa's making a come back (crossing my fingers, anyway) in his match against Djokovic at Monte Carlo. Vamos!
asimplechord: (Default)
Every other team (it seems) has had a de-aging fic.

Shouldn't this ) inspire a Canes one? Or is there one already, and I just haven't read it?
asimplechord: (Default)
Shame is for other people, right? Right. I posted some porn. victors/spoils. Genderswap hockey RPF. Je(ss) Skinner/Justin Faulk, post-game 6March2012.

bits and pieces in this 'verse that may or may not become fic at some point )
asimplechord: (Default)
So this happened. (LOL, "Each sent the Moody Theater audience -- which seemed more local and more fan-heavy than most SXSW crowds -- into howls and even some moshing." Because the pit was composed almost entirely of Green Day fans who guaranteed that if they got tickets, they would show up, else be blacklisted to future events.)

I missed FOB, but I think Green Day was a worthwhile exchange.

And then this happened. )

I returned home to find that Aaron hadn't suffered a relapse (he was just whining about being left to entertain himself), and this happened )

And I posted some fic: Celebration's impossible, genderswap hockey RPF, filling the "celebratory kiss" square on my trope bingo card.

One other good thing? BRMC's new album is out, synced to my iPod for the day's listening.

Now I'm going to go do some lab work, and tonight's the Revival Tour's stop in H-town. And possibly ponder vampire or werewolf fic. (Or porn.) It's Tabby's fault. And she's awesome for it. :)
asimplechord: (Default)
1. this Gally-squared primer
2. the Devils finally won one last night (even if it was in a shoot-out. against the Sabres)
3. running 6 miles in 54 minutes consistently (shut up, I know that's slow; I can either run fast or I can run that long, not both)
4. putting on a pair of trousers that used to be too uncomfortable to wear and realizing they fit perfectly now
5. this morning's surprise awesome result (SCIENCE!)
6. chat-fic with Tabby in which the Staals are a vampire clan, and Jordan's friendship with Jeff is making EStaal cranky

And I think this will continue the happy-making: seeing a local band, Hounds of Jezebel, tonight.

Now I'm going to finish my lunch and listen to the rest of the BHS podcast. As you do.
asimplechord: (Default)
Patrik Elias calls Adam Henrique "Rico". Something about this sent me immediately to Rico Suave, and now I can't get the idea out of my head. Not a good thing.

Fic-ish things to think about:

1. Nail Yakupov and AGally and cultural isolation, and the differences in their experiences being "Russian"
2. accidentally married fic set in GK fandom, probably a woke-up-in-Vegas thing that's Brad/Ray
3. 5 times Jess Skinner and Justin Faulk didn't share a celebration kiss and one time they did
4. that other 5 times Jess Skinner fic that's been outlined and half finished forever

Good things for the day:

1. Rafa returns to singles competition today. Vamos!
2. Rumor has it that Charlie Coyle has replaced Dany Heatley on the first line.
3. Tickets for the Houston Fall Out Boy show are reserved! (Hopefully OCK doesn't have any problems with my request.)
4. Aiming to get a manuscript submitted by the close of work today. Fingers crossed.

~ I fell asleep before the Sharapova/V. Williams match. And the Ferrer/Baghdatis match. I swear, I will watch more than just some Andy Murray beat-downs! Except for how NBCSports is airing Yale/Harvard tonight, and probably somewhere I can find a stream of the UND/Minnesota match up (this weekend is the last ever regular-season conference series between these two teams :( ).

+ Saturday: time to make the trip to ATX for music. HELLO, TADDY PORTER, I AM LOOKING AT YOU. I love indoors shows at Stubb's.

+ My brain. Seriously, this bit about jStaal and eStaal in the N&O (They won’t sit side-by-side in the Canes’ newly renovated locker room at PNC Arena – "He doesn’t want me that close to him all the time," Jordan jokes – but they will see enough of each other.) sent me straight to wondering if Skinner still has the stall next to eStaal, and it all devolved into fic-related ideas from there.

? Science query. I'm doing some RT-PCR, and we spec all our samples with a nanospec before calculating how much to use in each subsequent step of the process. But my question is: if I spec RNA, then do first-strand synthesis for cDNA and spec it again... how does the nanospec differentiate between free, unused dNTPs and ssDNA, which becomes the template for the next step? It's all based on absorbance at 260 and 280, right?

+ I posted the never-revealed fic I wrote for [profile] happyhockeydays over at AO3 (Shortest distance between two points, hockey rpf, Jeff Skinner/Eric Staal/Tanya Staal, mature), and the response has basically been yay, but GIVE ME THE 3SOME PORN. Which I guess is gratifying, because when I wrote it I was really not satisfied with the characterization. Partly because I was still sort of iffy on the subject of including a non-famous (or non-internet-famous) spouse in RPF, and I meant to write the porn (it's outlined) but I was up against a deadline so I polished what I had and submitted it.

~ The Aeros took 3 points out of 6 available this weekend. Granlund's already gone, and half the d-men plus at least three of the forwards are expected to get invitations to the Wild training camp, so I'm assuming next weekend's games will include a ton of dudes called up from Orlando.

+ The NHL is back. (Yes, I'm still happy about this. Even though I probably won't make it to a single game this season.)

- I am that person who doesn't use sick days unless I can't get out of bed, because I always feel like there's so much that MUST BE DONE. So today I went to work despite a cough and fever. Hey, at least my throat and ears were feeling better! And the fever broke mid-afternoon. But now my sinuses have decided to become a mucus factory. So I made some tea and I'm going to curl up with a book and a replay of the Great Lakes Invitational. And maybe think about writing. So, poll time:

I should write:

a) the porn that follows the 3some
b) the "sharing a bed" prompt for trope_bingo
c) the next bit in the outline of "5 guys Jess Skinner banged"
d) something to be explained in a comment

In the past whenever I used a gym, it was always one that run by the university by which I was employed or educated, and the equipment was not particularly new or fancy. In fact, if I was planning on running, I preferred to go outside or to use the indoor track rather than a treadmill, because treadmills :(.

Last night, after listening to the Aeros game for most of my workout (DAMN YOU, JUSTIN FAULK, AND YOUR GAME-TYING GOAL. DAMN YOU!), I decided to plug my iPod into the treadmill I was using for the cardio portion of the evening's activities.

As I told [personal profile] shutyourface, I may never run outside again. Seriously. Any movie or video on my iPod, playing on the display while I run, bike, or whatever the motion is for the elliptical?

Yeah.

It was all well and good until the Discos' set at Hove Festival was over and my iPod shuffled over to the video of MCR's I Don't Love You.

BOB BRYAR, I MISS YOU.

Sad truth: it is possible that I like Luther, at least the episodes I've watched so far, because Luther's relationship (such as it is) with Alice Morgan is almost as fucked up as Archie Sheridan's relationship with Gretchen in Chelsea Cain's Beauty Killer series.

Someone needs to poke me to tell the story of Brad & Nate in an alternate reality Casablanca-like AU. The Civil War never ended, because the South didn't over-reach and try to invade the North. Instead the war of attrition has gone on for nearly a century. Brad runs a hole-in-the-wall pub/inn sort of place that is a stop on the underground railroad. Nate is his ex-CO, still serving, with a post in DC for the moment.

Or.

The backstory of Clint telling Natasha that he remembers Budapest far differently than she does. With a Clint/Coulson slant. Like, Coulson is ALWAYS their handler, but for this one mission, he's busy (dealing with the Iron Man shenanigans, when Tony's first back from Afghanistan) so Sitwell or Woo or some junior agent is their contact. And things Do Not Go According To Plan. Clint's just annoyed at first, but then they come ~this close to getting seriously injured during their exfiltration, and, yeah, he's not a fan. Natasha, while always business-like and happy when things go according to plan, also takes occasional glee and pleasure in violence.

Give me: a fandom, character/pairing, two words or a phrase, and a number (that'll go to my iTunes for aural inspiration/prompt)

I'll write a drabble or ficlet.

I'm trying to get back into fandom, okay? TRYING.

♥ Hope you all have awesome days today!
asimplechord: (Default)
Because I didn't have anything scheduled for early hours in lab today, I slept in until the decadent hour of 6:30, and when I dragged myself out of bed, it was only to put on athletic clothes and plug in the elliptical.

Generation Kill DVD1 was still in, so I turned it on for something to watch. As you do. (I listen to my iPod for pace-setting, but it's nice to have some pretty eye-candy as I sweat).

So, this morning's deep thought. Or, you know, not deep at all, just enough to keep my brain occupied...

Someone should tell me the story of Brad secretly writing notes to Walt before they deployed, and giving them to his sister, who sprayed them with a little bit of Brad's cologne before mailing them. Then, while Ray's giving his "war is the motherfucking answer" monologue, Walt is sniffing Brad's cologne and thinking about the last night they spent together before orders came through. And Brad's just stretched out, a few feet away, his laptop open. To anyone else, it looks like he's intently studying schematics, but Walt can see the way he's peeking under his eyelashes, watching Walt for any reaction to his letter.

Yes? Someone should tell me more about this.

1. Rough draft of my [livejournal.com profile] we_pimpin fic is pretty much done. It needs a day before I go back and edit, then ship it off to beta.

2. Lesa & Katie (you can see her photos here) both wrote up the PStump shenanigans, and I don't have much to add. Except that I'm really excited for his next tour. And I am still ridiculously amused by the height difference here (HE IS SO TINY!), but at the time it felt weird to be so gigantic in comparison, so I slumped a bit the next time.

3. I want to read or write something to go with this photo. Yes? I don't even care what fandom, or if it's original fic. Just. The hands, and the pose.

4. I sort of want to take a bite out of Sam Stosur's biceps. They just look so firm and delicious.

And with that random comment, I believe I shall go watch the Ivanovic/Williams match, and then get ready to go up to the CWMP for Seether and A7X.

I hope everybody in the States is having a good Labor Day!

+ [livejournal.com profile] eckerlilas wins tonight! ♥ I hope she, [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface, [livejournal.com profile] fiddleyoumust, [livejournal.com profile] ericaplease, and [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane (and others I'm sure I'm forgetting) had an awesome time at the Discos' show tonight. PICS OF THE STEAM PUNK KIT, I WANT THEM!

+ Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane! Here's to a new year, full of exciting travel plans and a new place and hopefully lots of positive thoughts and events!

+ Spent the day wigged out because I couldn't remember the last time I'd seen my wedding ring. I don't even wear it 99% of the time, but when I was digging out earrings to wear this morning I didn't see it in its spot, and I couldn't figure out when I'd last worn it or where I might've put it. Searched before work, then after work I dug through all backpacks, bags, totes, and pockets before finding it.

All that stress for a hunk of pressed metal and crystal?

+ Spent half my work day using one of the department's confocal microscopes. IDK, it's good that the manager wants to help me learn the system, but she's a physicist, not a cell biologist, so I'm not sure that her advice will give me the result that I need. But at least I know now how to work the set-up, and I didn't bleach my samples, so I can always sign up for more time and re-acquire images with a higher magnification and redefining the original Z plane where I want, rather than where she thinks the cells look best.

+ Hey, new Against Me! album. I'm enjoying you. (Even though you're just different recordings/demos from Searching for a Former Clarity.)

+ Billie Joe Armstrong's teenaged sons have a band? And he produced their first album? I can't decide if I'm intrigued or if that convinces me even more that it's all about who you know.

+ So TAI's following in the footsteps of other DD/FBR bands? I'm sure I'll be sad about the departure of MGC and the Butcher at some point, but a) I'm enjoying his Animal Upstairs project, b) I'm curious to hear the new album without their influences, and c) I feel like, if there's any truth to the rumors about how Tomrad was given the heave-ho, we should enjoy some irony.

+ Time to settle into bed and set the TV so that I fall asleep watching today's French Open matches. I hear Rafa's match against Isner was more epic than it should've been? And that Nando's hair is making the FO its last stand?

+ I mentioned this in an email to [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not and [livejournal.com profile] jmc_bks. The world doesn't need more schmoop, right? But this pic cries out for it )

+ Last random thought for the day. Why did hero_living follow me back on twitter? I enjoy Rudy's (or whoever posts in lieu of Rudy) positive thoughts, but I didn't realize they followed people back. :/ Fourth wall, I like you.

I think I have been stockholmed into TSN fandom without EVER SEEING the movie, in the shortest amount of time it has ever taken a fandom to interest me. Especially since I am still not planning on ever seeing TSN.

I blame, in no particular order, [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane, Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield, and the ridiculously earnest and dorkily charming Jesse Eisenberg.

OK. NyQuil. Tea. An entire box of tissues. A copy of Mysterious Skin. I think I'm set for the evening.

I have spent the last hour mentally debating whether Nate in the college AU went to the Gilman School or Calvert Hall before heading off to Dartmouth.

This Nate's family lives in Roland Park. And Gilman is in Roland Park. And those are two of the schools that anyone who is anyone in the legal profession in the Balmer area might've attended. [Baltimore is clannish, okay? J and I had this discussion the other day about how when a banker or lawyer in Baltimore asks where you went to school, they're not asking about college - if you're from there, and practice there, they want to know if you went to Gilman or Calvert Hall or the Boys' Latin School.]

a) This is not my [livejournal.com profile] yagkyas fic.

b) This is not the Walt/Brad ficlet that needs to be transcribed.

c) WTAF, brain? Why are you focusing on minutiae when the bulk has yet to be written?

Fiction, obviously. Based on portrayals in the series, and implying nothing about any real people.

The story behind #12 of 10 Some Things About Bradley Ann Colbert. This was supposed to be an exercise in writing straight-up porn, since I've been having ~issues with that lately. That is not quite what happened. So we get porny schmoop. And I need to shift it out of the "in progress" folder to the "posted fic & ficlets" one, so you get it as is, entirely unbeta'd. No one to blame but me and my brain for this one. Title and cut text are from Audioslave's Be Yourself.

don't lose any sleep tonight / I'm sure everything will end up alright )
