+ Fall Out Boy in Texas happened. Patrick Stump's solo efforts really changed the way he works a stage. And it's weird, because I never really watched Pete Wentz that closely (I usually aimed for Joe's side of the stage in the past, but was in front of Pete for 2 out of 3 shows this weekend), but now I wonder how much his stage manner has changed with Patrick's evolution. Holy hell, Patrick's vocal range. When he belts out the lines in Save Rock & Roll that Elton John sang on the album? UNF.

+ I had a [personal profile] why_me_why_not for the weekend! Except she is gone now, and I feel like we didn't have enough time to just chill and watch hockey together.

+ The house is listed!

+ Bonnaroo is a thing that is happening this week. \o/ /o\

+ I finished the imaging for Other Post-Doc's paper resubmission today. The rebuttal is due Monday. No rush, or anything.

+ Apparently PK Subban is going to win the Norris? IDK IDK, I wish there was an award for highest scoring defenseman separate from being a great defensive defenseman. But whatever. Good for him.

1. Work! Boss is out of town at a professional meeting, so there have been no "I know you're busy, but can you please do this too?" conversations. I appreciate this.

2. Aeros. :( They still haven't (and probably won't) signed a new lease with Les Alexander and the Toyota Center. It's 99% certain that they're moving to Des Moines after this season.

3. Also Aeros: Eric Haula is supposed to play in his first AHL game tonight. :) Curious to see the Gophers' leading scorer at this level. And there are plenty of guys he's played with or against on the team, so.

4. Leftover birthday cake for breakfast: still an excellent life choice, no matter how much my trainer disapproves.

5. As much as I'm enjoying Empires' Live In Chicago, I still feel that this must be said: GIMME THAT NEW MUSIC. I KNOW YOU'VE RECORDED IT.

6. Apparently it's a good week for music on the internet: Frank Turner's live EP is streaming, and so is Fall Out Boy's Save Rock and Roll. WELL DONE, BUTCH WALKER. WELL. DONE.

7. Clayton Stoner. Why is he still playing? Oh, right, because apparently the Wild only have three useful defensemen, and they need warm bodies. Can't they call up Kampfer? Scandella? Mara, even? Ugh, that pass was so ugly.

S: Are you doing the St. Arnold's Heights pubcrawl Saturday?

Me: Depends on whether I get tickets to the All Star thing downtown.

S: I didn't know you were a basketball fan.

Me: I'm not particularly, but Fall Out Boy are performing.

S: Aren't they a boy band? I didn't know you were into that sort of thing.

Me: ...

D: The coffee shop in the ground floor of my building used to sell a small coffee (12 oz) for $1 (with tax). As of today, it is now a Starbucks location, and a small coffee costs $1.72. *sigh* Sbux, I liked my not-corporate, cheap coffee in the morning.

? What constitutes "new artist" for the Grammy's? Because Some Nights was fun.'s second album, and I remember a couple of years ago when Katy Perry was nominated that she'd released several albums as her inspirational/Christian incarnation before remaking herself into a pop singer.

+ Go, Devils. :)

+/- Still hoping that some of us will get off the waitlist onto the "yes you have tickets" list for the All Star thingy on Saturday. FOB what.

Patrik Elias calls Adam Henrique "Rico". Something about this sent me immediately to Rico Suave, and now I can't get the idea out of my head. Not a good thing.

Fic-ish things to think about:

1. Nail Yakupov and AGally and cultural isolation, and the differences in their experiences being "Russian"
2. accidentally married fic set in GK fandom, probably a woke-up-in-Vegas thing that's Brad/Ray
3. 5 times Jess Skinner and Justin Faulk didn't share a celebration kiss and one time they did
4. that other 5 times Jess Skinner fic that's been outlined and half finished forever

Good things for the day:

1. Rafa returns to singles competition today. Vamos!
2. Rumor has it that Charlie Coyle has replaced Dany Heatley on the first line.
3. Tickets for the Houston Fall Out Boy show are reserved! (Hopefully OCK doesn't have any problems with my request.)
4. Aiming to get a manuscript submitted by the close of work today. Fingers crossed.

:)))))

MY PHONE IS EXPLODING FROM TWEETS, EVEN THOUGH ONLY PEOPLE I ACTUALLY KNOW IRL ARE SENT TO IT. THANK YOU, PSTUMP, FOR MAKING SURE THAT I WILL GET ABSOLUTELY NOTHING DONE TODAY FOR FLAILING OVER FALL OUT BOY TOUR DATES.

TOUR DATES. STOMPY FEET IN MY FACE.

+ Chicago was awesome! Lolla was great, except for the deluge(s) on Sunday. If you check out the Lolla YouTube channel, the video of the Cage The Elephant set? You can't tell, not really, how it was POURING. But it was. We literally could not see Sears Tower through the rain, it came down so hard. And it was still a good time. We were the filthiest. And that was before wading into the poorly drained mud pit that is the north end of Grant Park for the Foo Fighters' set.

Possibly unpopular opinion: I was not that impressed with the Black Cards. Bebe's hot, and the songs are okay, but they didn't hold my attention for the length of the set. (I sort of feel the same about Crystal Castles and DeadMau5: house/dance music is fine, but DNW 30-60 minutes of it unleavened with other beats, especially if it's broad daylight, not a dark, smoky club.) And Pete... just seemed like a frat boy on a rampage. I mean, do your DJing, pimp Patrick, stage dive as much as you want. But throwing what seemed like an endless supply of toilet paper to the crowd to get them to TP everything? Meh.

Patrick Stump, on the other hand? Unf. Gimme all the 90's R&B/hiphop covers in the world, and I'll listen.

Other sets I enjoyed: Friendly Fires (wow, the lead singer looks crazily double-joined at the hip!), Smith Westerns (I thought this set was better than the one at Bonnaroo), My Morning Jacket (ditto), Muse (not quite as good as the ACL set last year), Damien Marley & Nas, Ellie Goulding, Lykke Li, Explosions In The Sky.

+ Work. Eh. Good stuff, bad stuff. Spent a lot of time doing imaging lately. I ranted in an email-chain entry about Student. IDK. At this point, I wonder if he's even going to meet the deadlines to defend his master's thesis before the end of the fall term. Also, the med students are back, which makes me >:/ with their need to take the elevator one fucking floor, to walk in packs the full width of the hallway at an extremely slow pace, and to generally get in my way.

+ I got my [livejournal.com profile] we_pimpin assignment! I'm sort of excited about it! And I am rewatching GK for some inspiration. :D :D :D

+ Took the laptop to the Apple Store. Explained that I thought the fan needed to be replaced. The guy reset the battery, and the fan didn't come on for the 10 or so minutes that he fiddled with things. I told him that I'd reset the SMC myself, and that I thought the fans still needed to be cleaned and or replaced. He said the battery reset should fix it. But I've had it booted for approximately 10 minutes with nothing but the text editor and firefox open, and the fan's going like mad. So we'll see. Everything's backed up, at least.

+ Attending a lingerie shower/bachelorette party tonight. I... don't really want to go? I'm not that close to the bride - the groom is better friends with A than I am with the bride - and I am tired of the continuous round of engagement party, bachelorette party, wedding gift shopping for people who have been working and living together long enough not to actually need a shower in order to furnish a new home. Plus, I have work to do tomorrow, and getting sloppy drunk is not on my agenda for the evening. Ugh, when did I start being a grown-up? But anyway, skimpy "goth" schoolgirl outfit assembled for the bride, since the groom has a fetish. (NGL, it sort of skeeves me to know that about him.)

+ Now to backread what I've missed over the last ten days or so. &youguys;

I tried to post at DW, and apparently since I changed my username here since I set up the crossposting info at DW, it's having issues? IDK. Whatever. Comment here, there, or not at all.

While LJ's behaving...

+ I forget to post over there, mostly, but I am favoritemistake over on DW.

+ Been re-reading Snarry and Snarry/Weasley fic. How much do I love [livejournal.com profile] anal_cram_ink's Beaters & Seekers? A LOT.

+ My schedule for the next week:

Today: work
Saturday: work briefly, play at the Alley
Sunday: work (at least four uninterrupted hours with the Nikon A1)
Monday: work (four more hours with the A1)
Tuesday: work (four more hours with the A1), dentist appt
Wednesday: work (four MORE hours with the A1 if I can wangle them from the imaging facility manager), pack
Thursday: CHICAGO (MAP ROOM, I'M LOOKING AT YOU)
Friday/Saturday/Sunday: LOLLAPALOOZA (PATRICK. BLACK CARDS. GOLD MOTEL. FOO FIGHTERS. SMITH WESTERNS. FITZ & THE TANTRUMS. SKRILLEX. PAAAATRICK.)
Monday: fly back to Houston, work

What's up with y'all?
asimplechord: (Cupid's chokehold)
1. Mumford & Sons will be at Bonnaroo. \o/ They didn't come to Houston on their last tour.

2. Discos are joining Weezer at the DC101 Chili thingy. It is possible that I will visit my sister that weekend. Just, you know, maybe. :D

3. Goddamn, PStump. Bring your ass to TX soon, pls. (I am sort of amused by the reviewer saying that PStump "fronted" FOB for a decade. He sang. He played guitar. IMO, Pete was the frontman.)

And now I'm going to fix some coverslips, and then head up to the Saucer for Aaron's sixth plate party. (JFC, that's a lot of beer. 200 beers per plate.)
asimplechord: (Billie Joe is my hero)
1. Rough draft of the manuscript is going to all the co-authors tomorrow, probably. Now I can focus on experiments for the grant renewal until we get comments back. Um, yay?

2. You'd think by now I'd stop being surprised when PStump does something that charms me. But the video for Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia) does precisely that. Him, trying to match the feat with the cups! And then the look on his face when he's sitting there with the little girl doing her belly dance and the guy with the long, twisty tongue! (NGL, I'm just as glad he didn't try some of the other things.)

3. August: Osage County was the longest. play. ever. Very Tennessee Williams- and Faulkner-ish without being set in the deep South.

4. I need to plan my schedule for SXSW. And RSVP to some more parties, etc.

5. Party at my house, 12th March. Imperial stout and doppelbock, home-brewed, until the kegs are dry.

Dante is sitting on the arm of A's chair, giving me the stink-eye. All b/c I shoved him off my lap when he wouldn't stop kneading my sweater.
asimplechord: (inevitable)
1. I know everyone's (prematurely) mourning the news about FOB (;__;), but here's some happy music news: Garbage might put out a new album. \o/ (Also, congrats again to Butch Vig for 21st Century Breakdown's Grammy win.)

2. I haven't written out my [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine fic yet. So why (WHY?) am I writing Generation Kill fic instead? I blame [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey. And my hand kink.

Um. Happy Tuesday? :D? :D? D:?

Listening to today's broadcast of Democracy Now made me want fic in which Jeremy Scahill has some reason to interview Nate Fick, CEO of CNAS. Brad has absolutely no reason to be apprehensive about this when he gets a Google alert about it, right? Because a) they were never with Blackwater, they're MARINES and b) Scahill's just a liberal media dicksuck. (Shut up about him setting a Google alert to Nate's name.) But somehow Scahill and Nate end up being the Beltway's new darlings, and they do the circuit of Sunday morning talking heads for weeks, taking up Nate & Brad's usual together time, and he is Not Amused.

Now back to contemplating how so much talent was packed into the tiny body of one Patrick V. Stump. And work, of course.
asimplechord: (say what?)
+ What, precisely, is Joe Trohman going to fill four hours of air time with every week?

+ Left work early today. Felt like crap. So tired of feeling feverish and run-down.

+ BUT. I got a really cool result this week. :)

+ Heading down toward Rockport this weekend to see the grandparents-in-law. Um, yay?

+ Have been immersed in Generation Kill. Read some fic, read Nate Fick's book, watched some YouTube of the "making of", rewatching the miniseries. NGL, I could watch ASkars pretty much non-stop and not ever get tired of him.

+ My [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine fic is plotted (if one can use "plot" when really it's just porn) in my head. Now I just need to actually type it out.

Again, really? OK.

Day 29 → Hopes, dreams and plans for the next 365 days

I don't really do resolutions, as such, because I find them counterproductive. I'd like to be happy and healthy and still employed in the new year, and wish the same for everyone else here.

Day 30 → Whatever tickles your fancy

Well, I'm pretty tickled by this twitpic. I just can't help but smile. I mean, really? How many people can you fit into a bathroom safely, along with sharp objects and a cameraphone? And om nom hair?

:DDDD

New music! Them Crooked Vultures' CD and Believers Never Die were waiting for me when I got home last night. I listened to TCV, then put the BND DVD on and got about half-way through the band commentary before forcing myself off my ass to exercise. My primary response: oh, boys.

The Get Up Kids tonight :D

White Collar. Possibly unpopular opinion: I could make Elizabeth/Peter/Neal an OT3, but otherwise, not so much with the Peter/Neal.

House, MD. Cameron needs to stop being a hypocrite. Um, yeah. That's all I have to say about last night's episode.

DDDD: )

OK. I am going to go calibrate my pipettemen and measure scratch width in my wounded cells. Hope y'all are having a good day.

At the Houston date of the blink-182 tour, Pete Wentz mentioned that the Fall Out Boys felt like midgets next to blink-182.

They are. Proof )

Play For Keeps' EP arrived today, and the return address looks suspiciously like a residential Las Vegas address. Cash Colligan, are you taking lessons from Tom Conrad in encouraging stalker fans?

*sigh*

So far this week I've gotten home at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, and 8pm after work. I am contemplating skipping the Drive By Truckers show at HOB tomorrow just so I have some quiet time at home to exercise and get some chores and some fanfic writing done.

What's up with y'all?
asimplechord: (half-faded)
~ I feel like crap. The tickle in my throat that started on Sunday afternoon has turned into congestion that's moving into my lungs. Awesome. ACL will be fun. At least we have a hotel room, rather than sleeping on cold, wet ground this time, right?

~ The wedding in Ithaca was pretty, but I knew no one except for the bride. AWKWARD. I am reminded that I miss seasons, particularly autumn, which is my favorite.

~ I'm trying to get my lab meeting presentation and the poster for the AACR meeting done by Thursday. And do everything else in lab that I'd planned. I have been a wee bit busy.

~ This week I wished for the first time ever that we lived in LA. Srsly, Butch Walker. Come back to Stubb's soon, please.

~ I never talked about the Houston date for the blink-182 show, did I? We had seats, so there was no need to be at the venue at the buttcrack of dawn. Three of us (me, [livejournal.com profile] eckerlilas, and [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface) did the FOB M&G, and as we were lining up to follow Dre, some woman asked if we'd signed up with T-Mobile. We almost declined, b/c we thought it was for another FOB M&G, but it was for a seat upgrade or blink-182 M&G. So we filled in the little slips of paper, and lo and behold, shortly after the doors opened, I got a call from some dude with a LA area code telling me and a companion ([livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey) to come to the T-Mobile booth for the M&G. (I'd've asked [livejournal.com profile] playfullips too, if we were allowed another companion, but they only allowed one each.)

So. FOB AND blink-182 M&G at the same show. Now I've got all their scribbles on (one of) my copy(ies) of Where The Wild Things Are. Thanks, Andy, for signing it "fuck Maurice".

We missed Asher Roth (no biggie, IMO) and the first couple of songs of AAR's set, but we made it back in time to fill our ears and eyes with glittery!Tyson. For FOB and blink-182? I don't really LIKE having seats rather than pit, but this show was amazing, even from seats. Patrick Stump was on, all over the place. And Travis Barker's rotating, levitating drum kit will never not be cool.

I didn't know that [livejournal.com profile] sunn_doyouknow was going to be there, but she found us as we wandered back out to the parking lot. Fangirl commune, if only for a few moments.

*sigh*

~ What else? Um. Them Crooked Vultures are at Stubb's Thursday night. I am very excited.

Friday was the beginning of Chicago shenanigans! (And Minneapolis, since I decided after winning M&G there to actually ATTEND that concert.)

Fangirl funtimes )

I have to get some sleep so I can be coherent for work tomorrow, so here are some pics without commentary. They're not particularly awesome pics, but if you take them and use them, let me know. I'm having issues with Photobucket and my camera, which appears to have duplicated EVERY FUCKING PICTURE, so when I get it sorted out, I'll upload more and comment about the Minneapolis show. ♥
