asimplechord: (Barbapapa reading)
Anne of Green Gables fandom: Rilla Blythe's Wedding: A Not Entirely Comprehensive Account. I cried and cried when I read Rilla of Ingleside as a teenager. But this story has a tone that acknowledges the grief that the Blythe family and the world are trying to forget in the wake of World War I, and at the same time, makes it RIGHT. (Plus, the gossiping of the Four Winds/Glen St. Mary's matrons is spot-on.)

Sports Night fandom: The Offside Rule. This is Dan/Casey fic, and I love the banter. Plus, SOCCER.

Bandom: One Step Forward (Two Steps Back). This is early-Panic fic. It was written for the 2009 Bandom Big Bang, but since it's a sort of weird pairing (Jon Walker/Brent Wilson), I didn't read it for the longest time. I like the outsider view of the Discos and TAI as they got popular and started to fall apart.

Tennis RPF: Ferris Wheel Lights On. Novak/Rafa. Not explicit. I pretty much love any fic that captures Rafa's playfulness and young wisdom.

Atlas Shrugged fandom: Breaking Dawn. Oh, man. There is so much I like about this fic. It's what we DON'T see in the book when Hank Reardon leaves "civilization" for Galt's Gulch, what happens when he gets there. I love the job he takes, I love where he ends up living, becoming better friends with Francisco D'Anconia, and there's a scene with John Galt that is just perfect.

Temeraire fandom: Gemology. Emily Roland is going to be an amazing Long-wing dragon-captain when she grows up. But this is not that story. This is about the garnets that Laurence's mother sent her, and about what they mean.

Day 01 → My favorite song
Day 02 → My favorite movie
Day 03 → My favorite television program
Day 04 → My favorite book
Day 05 → My favorite quote
Day 06 → Whatever strikes my fancy
Day 07 → A photo that makes me happy
Day 08 → A photo that makes me sad
Day 09 → A photo that I took
Day 10 → A photo of me, taken at least 10 years ago
Day 11 → A photo of me, taken recently
Day 12 → Whatever strikes my fancy
Day 13 → A fictional book
Day 14 → A non-fictional book

Day 14 →A fanfic

The first fanfic I ever read (if we're not counting things like Wide Sargasso Sea and Scarlett) was Kalina Lea's The Buried Life. I found it accidentally, when I was searching for something related to Laurie King's Mary Russell series. I put "Russell/Holmes" into google, and got hits for Kalina Lea's fanfic. The Russell/Holmes fanfic didn't interest me, but I was fascinated by the idea of Severus Snape and Hermione Granger as a pairing.

Thus began my trip down the garden path from HP fanfic to SPN to RPS to bandom.

I didn't linger with the Snape/Hermione shippers, but Snape was and still is my very favorite Harry Potter character, in the books and in fanfic. (Although the Weasley twins are a close second.)

Weekend/Monday things:

  • We finally finished watching Angel. \o/ Seriously? Joss Whedon should have stopped around season 2. Had to watch Serenity to renew my love for Joss. Also, I should concede that Angel would have made much more sense if I had ever watched Buffy.

  • We set up the new tent, just so that the first time we did so wasn't at the campground in the middle of the night. It is HUGE in comparison to the old one. The old one was a hiking tent, just big enough for two sleeping bags. This one is enough for six, probably, and it can be divided so there's a little outer area and an inner one.

  • RIP George Tiller. (I would seriously like to know how someone who claims to be be "pro-life" can justify celebrating this death. Hypocrites.)

  • Got sucked into reading Star Trek (reboot) fanfic. *facepalm* Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, the things you make me do.

1. Random stranger sat down next to me on the light rail and started talking to me about the book I was reading (Lawrence Lessig's The Future Of Ideas: "Oh, that looks serious. Is it?").

a) I had my iPod earbuds in my ears and an open book in my hands, which are clear signs that I'm not interested in idle chatter.

b) Unless you're *with* someone, you do not just start conversation on the commuter rail. It's just one of those things, and as far as I can tell (from SLC to Chicago to DC) it's pretty universal. Public transportation faux pas, okay?

2. Dear Fandom,
Please keep amusing me with (y)our over-invested ideas and interpretation of public twitters (without considering that it's entirely possible that they're communicating OFF twitter). Honestly, this almost as good as the OMG-they're-so-mean-to-Bden-the-band-is-going-to-break-up flailing that happened when the PR stuff for Pretty.Odd went down last year. And as far as I can see in the pics Shane's posted? Panic is still Discoing.

3. Again, fandom: I don't understand outrage about last week's SPN episode. If we can't laugh at our obsessions, maybe we *are* that creepy.

4. 11 DAYS!

♥ Henry Jenkins' blog posts about gift/shared economies. LJ what?

♥ Gabe Saporta. IDK, guys, I'm listening to Midtown's stuff again, just for the lyrics for characterization purposes, and I don't understand - he out-emo'd Pete Wentz, how does everyone not love him? Why is he always characterized as skeevy and gross?

Speaking of Midtown, does anybody have their split albums? I've got the four full-length ones to trade, if you're interested.

♥ WGN and its rebroadcasts of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Q!

In fandom related news, I have to say, WTF brain? Seriously, always-a-girl band fic? Zoo AU? Clearly, someone's put something in my coffee.

Also, once again I must say: a beta reader is not someone who just cheerleads and runs spell-check. A good beta discusses ideas, checks grammar, spelling, etc. They also might point out factual or technical errors. (FYI: Changing a flat rear tire on a bike? Does not require a special tool. The wheel comes off the chain, and then you replace the tube -- and possibly the actual outer tire if glass messed it up enough -- the same way you'd do a front tire.)

As a reminder: bear =/= bare, and "its" should only ever have an apostrophe if it's a contraction of "it is". Are we clear? Kthnx.

Finally, I really really like HOWL. I wasn't sure how I felt about it on first listen, because I was maybe expecting something TAI-like, but second, third and fourth listens convinced me. If I get out of lab at a decent hour tonight, maybe I'll do a track-by-track comment thingy.

ETA: Also, telling me our summer undergrad would start 1June and then springing her on me today? NOT COOL. Nor is a request to take a second summer undergrad b/c the program accepted more than they actually had spots for. Especially if they don't speak English. Like, at all. I can't supervise someone if I can't communicate with them.

My serious LOL moments in the last twelve hours:

1. While we were sitting in the theater before Prince Caspian started last night, I complained about the over-air-conditioned-ness and pulled on my Black Parade hoodie. MrIris asked about the MCR concerts, and somehow we got around to the fact that the MSG show was the last of the tour, and that was their last tour for a while. Somehow, he hadn't quite caught on to that when I flailed about going. (More evidence that he zones when I talk about music or books he's not interested in; that's okay, I make appropriate noises when he talks about his video games, but mostly it's in one ear and out the other.)

When he asked why the hiatus, I ennumerated the various reasons band members have cited, ending with, "And they've all got married now except the drummer, so they probably want to spend time at home being, you know, couples."

I figured he'd get that, since we spent three years living 1200 miles apart.

His response? "I thought they were all gay."

OMG you guys, I about fell out of my chair laughing.

See, it is not just slashers with tin hats who buy into it!

2. My iTunes Shuffle took me from MCR's Welcome To The Black Parade to The Five Four Of Us Are Dying by NIN. Dear Ray Toro, what would your superstitious mind tell you about that coincidence?

The Music is my boyfriend meme:

Pick a number between 1 and 4152, and give me a pairing/very vague scenario or prompt. This number corresponds to a song on my iTunes. When you pick one, I'll give you that song and a drabble to go along with it for your pairing/scenario/prompt.

Potter 'verse, SPN/RPS, Criminal Minds, sports, and bandom.

I can't promise to have them all done until after My Chemical Roadtrip, but thinking about the drabbles will keep me occupied during the (interminable) drives from Houston to Dallas to Austin to Houston.

Also. Tonight. Tonight, tonight! [livejournal.com profile] randomepiphany arrives. And this time tomorrow, we'll be on our way to the Woodlands' Pavilion to see BuzzFest. :DD

But at the same time, there are some not-so-cool things. In which I babble about one of these things. )

Coupla things.

First, my gift fic is posted over at IJ's Snarry Smutswap. [livejournal.com profile] quill_lumos did a fabulous job on a last-minute switch in recipients, so please give her much praise.

Warnings: Vampires, biting, blood sharing, little bit of OOC ness, but hey, it’s Harry’s first time.

What else? Um, my brain is overloaded with input at the moment, and that means nothing is getting written. Epic fail on my part. I open Word and my mind shorts out.

And lastly, Read more... )

So, there are some things I don't really get about the bandslash fandom. Like, why would you want to have an "Unpopular Bandom Opinion Meme", anonymous or not? That's inviting wank. Does anybody really need that?

I mean, I don't mind sharing my opinions, unpopular or not. But I'd rather not stick them out there as a bull's eye for sniping.

unintelligible science babble below )

Also? I'd really like it if the Chief and ex-student S would stop being so damn passive-aggressive and TALKED to each other. It'd make my life so much easier.

So, the Killers remind me of my grandma now. I know you're thinking wtf, but there is a reason for it. )

Also. NO MORE IDEAS, KTHNX. My brain is overloaded with input, and now nothing is getting done. One birthday fic is already late and getting later every minute, another is only just outlined, and the next two bits of RPS are still unfinished. what? )

And, you know, I'd just like remind myself before I post any new fic that, as we've all seen before but were reminded in the last week, not everyone about whom RPF is written follows the advice that MikeyWay is giving here )

I'm suffering withdrawal. We're unable to get Comedy Central, so I've been Stewart-less and Colbert-less this week. Tragic, isn't it?

I'm hoping we can figure out the problem so that on Monday I can see what Colbert has to say about not being allowed on the ballot in S. C.. (I assume, given the late hour of the announcement, that he wouldn't have been able to include it in tonight's broadcast.)

Hey, are you guys following the discussion of gender and fan studies over at Henry Jenkins' blog?

Today's bit is part of a discussion between Catherine Tosenberger and Geoffrey Long, and includes discourse about fanon vs. canon, touching on differences between fandoms and how some items that are really fringe in some fandoms have become mainstays in others.

One of the things I find interesting about Tosenberger in particular is that her 'ships in HP fandom revolve around the Weasley twins and include twincest, and her current fandom obsession is the gen vs. incest divide in Supernatural fanfic.

ETA: Oh, hey, and while we're thinking about all those published novels like Wide Sargasso Sea which could be considered fanfic but aren't, have y'all heard that there's supposed to be a book published that's Rhett Butler's POV of Gone With The Wind? That is wrong, wrong, WRONG. Rhett is a man of mystery; I don't want to know what he's thinking. He's the strong, silent type. The other "sequels" were bad enough. Scarlett, leave Tara? As. If.

*sigh*
