I don't think I've ever actually cried because of a song. The closest I get is Wonderful, by Everclear. I know a lot of people don't like Everclear or have a really mixed opinion of them (him), for a variety of reasons. But as a child of divorce, who lived in at least 8 different homes in the first twelve years of life, with little or no contact with my father until the last few years, some of Alexakis's lyrics strike a pretty tender chord, and these in particular resonate so hard it hurts.

The first fanfic I ever read (if we're not counting things like Wide Sargasso Sea and Scarlett) was Kalina Lea's The Buried Life. I found it accidentally, when I was searching for something related to Laurie King's Mary Russell series. I put "Russell/Holmes" into google, and got hits for Kalina Lea's fanfic. The Russell/Holmes fanfic didn't interest me, but I was fascinated by the idea of Severus Snape and Hermione Granger as a pairing.

Thus began my trip down the garden path from HP fanfic to SPN to RPS to bandom.

I didn't linger with the Snape/Hermione shippers, but Snape was and still is my very favorite Harry Potter character, in the books and in fanfic. (Although the Weasley twins are a close second.)

asimplechord: (Tomrad)
+ Currently trying to decide if I want to go to Illinois for the last weekend in January for my favorite faily boys & Greta, or if I want to wait a week and go for the 5th anniversary show TAI's doing for the release of Almost Here. I really want to see Empires, but I am not looking forward to the drive to Urbana. I can't do both b/c I'm probably going to take a day off in February to see Jack's Mannequin in San Antonio or Dallas (because they are not coming to Houston on their headlining tour AGAIN) and either a ski trip or visit to NYC to see the Austen exhibit and hang out with J on MLK Jr Day. Decisions, decisions. (I know, my life: so hard.)

+ Sign-ups for the MS150 seem to be open much longer this time around. MrIris is definitely doing the ride, and I'm happy to do the training with him, but I do not like being in a pack of 13000 bicyclists all converging on a single street in Austin.

+ My body hates me today. Why, cramps?

+ Thanks to last night's twitpic, Gabe Saporta & Adam Lambert are currently cohabiting fic-writing space in my brain. (In the compartment next door, Bden, Spence, and PStump are hanging out.) IDEK, guys.

Day 14 →A non-fictional book

Again the weird phrasing. My favorite work of non-fiction, one that I've read recently: Robert Fisk's The Great War for Civilization. It's a really heavy read. Long, small print. But beautifully written. As you might imagine from the title, it draws many parallels between WWI and the US Armed Forces' current imbroglio in the Middle East. History is intertwined with Fisk's personal history and current events. It took me nearly a month to read this book, mostly just reading on weekends, but it was worth it.

Day 13 → A fictional book

Ah, this is a weird phrase. If by this the meme's creator means a work of fiction, I'll point you toward the honorable mentions list at the bottom of Day 04's entry.

Or, okay, the book I'm reading now: Lessons In Love. J has been telling me for ages about this series of ebooks she read by Charlie Cochrane, called the Cambridge Fellows Mysteries, so I finally purchased the first in the series and started reading it last night. They're set in Edwardian England, at Cambridge, and the two main characters, Jonty and Orlando, are fellows at St. Bride's (is that a real college?), who eventually fall in love.

It's interesting so far. I'm only a couple of chapters in. NGL, I was afraid the writing would be like badfic, b/c I've skimmed samples on some ebook websites, but it's well written and entertaining thus far.

As for the awkwardly phrased title in the meme, if it's supposed to mean a book that's fictional, as in not-real, well. Hmm. I'll have to think about that.

Day 12 →Whatever strikes my fancy

Pimping strikes my fancy! If you live in the mid-Atlantic area and are a Jane Austen fan, this is something you should see!

While I am not the Austen aficionado that J is, I am very fond of Sense and Sensibility and Emma, and I am quite fascinated by the way Austen's work is both a reflection of her life and an invitation for modern authors to speculate and expand.

(What is the glut of austen-based books like Pride & Prejudice & Zombies or The Secret Diaries of Jane Austen or Mrs. Darcy except a for-profit version of fan fiction, I wonder?)

But I digress.

J sent pics and descriptions of her day trip to Bath during her trip to the UK, which made me quite envious. I'm not likely to get to the UK in the near future, but I might see if I can wedge a trip to NYC in some time before March, so that I can see The Morgan's Jane Austen exhibit.

Day 1 )

In other news, I freaked myself out reading Haunted last night, because I didn't realize that my copy's cover glows in the dark until I turned out the light and voila, glowing ghost face on my bedside table.

Unpopular opinion time! I don't have Adam Lambert's album on repeat. It's okay, but his cover choices were hit-or-miss in terms of my appreciation, and this album continues that trend. I like Fever, but I'm sort of indifferent to the rest of it. Different strokes, right?

I've got a glass of wine and a kitty on my lap, and I'm listening to the patter of rain off the roof and the patio, reading some Star Trek fic. (If you haven't read [livejournal.com profile] dreamlittleyo's Kirk/Spock fic, I recommend it. If K/S is your thing, of course.)

What's up with y'all this fine first day of December?
asimplechord: (Spencer Smith)
Comment and I'll give you a letter. You have to list 10 things you love that begin with that letter. Afterwards, post this in your journal.

Tabby gave me "S".

∞ Science! As much as I complain about the people and the ridiculous constraints set by the institution, I love doing science every day.

∞ Supernatural. You knew that was coming, right? Last night's episode really reminded me why I fell in love with this TV series.

∞ Spencer Smith. Again, no surprise there, right? His snark in interviews, his shiny hair, his drumming. (Can I add [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface to this entry? She'd appreciate being lumped in with Spencer Smith, I'm sure.)

∞ Saporta, Gabe. What? That totally counts! Srsly, this can't surprise anyone. He has his own tag, okay? I love his life philosophy, I love that he sang the Jersey scene a love song as a goodbye on Cobra Starship's first album, I love that he fanboys his label and friends so hard. Also? He looks pretty in a suit, and when he sings in Spanish I don't even care that I only get half of what he's saying, it makes me swoon.

∞ Socks! I have two drawers in my dresser just for socks. I love little bitty footies and ankle socks and knee highs, plain colors, stripes, crazy patterns. I have Tigger socks and candy corn socks (I have a lot of Halloween socks, tbh) and socks with little red crabs on them. Socks with high heels shoes, socks with sparkly snowflakes.

Swim, by Jack's Mannequin. I'm at work, or I'd share this song. The piano and the lyrics slay me.

Sense and Sensibility. I love the book and all of the movie/tv versions, although I am not really fond of Hugh Grant as Ferrars. Then again, the Grant/Thompson version has Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon, which goes a long way in ameloriating any negatives associated with Grant.

∞ Sushi. Every time I think about returning to vegetarianism, I remember I'd have to give up sushi. Never gonna happen. I like my wasabi-soaked massago and fresh tuna too much.

∞ Stoker, Bram. He wrote the best. Vampire book. Ever.

∞ Suzanne Vega. Her lyrics. Esp. The Queen and The Soldier and Undertow and Gypsy. I also have a soft spot for Calypso.

Wanna play?

A few days back, [livejournal.com profile] redorchids picked these icons when I volunteered for her meme. So. Six icons, six drabbles. Sorry it took me so long.

HG/SS, Potterverse, 265 words )

Jepha/Bob, bandom, 247 words )

Spencer/Brendon, bandom, 127 words )

Patrick/Brendon, bandom, 150 words )

Gabe and Pete, bandom, 178 words )

Ryan gen, bandom, 156 words )

So. You can volunteer for this yourself and I'll pick 6 of your icons, or you can tell me six additional icons that should be drabble fodder for me.

+ *points upward* That was Nick Wheeler, not Tyson. Actually Tyson spoke both before and after him, and you can imagine the tenor of his comments. I'm afraid to look away or turn the sound down when AAR are giving an interview, because there's no telling what'll come out of Nick or Tyson's mouth. Or Chris or Mike's, but they were actually pretty quiet in the Absolute Radio interview.

+ I think our stove is dying. The other night when we cooked supper it was fine, but this morning when things were under way to brew beer, having any of the eyes on high made the entire cooktop burning hot, and the metal holders underneath the coils are blackened.

+ The Idiot is working today also. This makes me very unhappy, because I was looking forward to a day in lab without him.

+ meme (via [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not):

1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

2. Going Under - BRMC

3. Golden Ticket - The Manchester Orchestra

4. A Good Night's Sleep - The Starting Line

5. The Guest (live version) - Phantom Planet
