1. The ship-breaking photography exhibit at the South Street Seaport Museum gorgeous. The museum is sort of small, and somewhat limited, but interesting, and the $5 fee gives you free entrance to the Museum of the City of New York also. The photos for this particular exhibit are beautifully stark, almost post-apocalyptic. It made me think I should ask my dad what happens to the ships his company decommissions, if they go to Chittagong, or if they're sold to other companies.

2. Richard III - OMG, RICHARD, POOR MALIGNED KING. History is written by the victors, and I firmly believe that the Tudors had as much or more motive to murder the two boys in the tower, but this play, god. Kevin Spacey was by turns vulnerable and psychotic. And the drums. The drumline, to accent everything. Also, Buckingham. Chuk Iwuji's Buckingham was outstanding. (Note to self: must watch The Usual Suspects again. Did Spacey choose the brace as part of R3's infirmity b/c he's used to that sort of limp?)

On a theatrical note, also: Alan Rickman still pwns. I was having some Deep Thoughts about the fact that there are five characters in Seminar, two female and three male, and of them, two remain completely clothed. One male character goes shirtless briefly. One female character spends ~30 seconds with her tits on display. Another moons the audience. I understand why at least one of the other characters stayed fully clothed. But was ass-baring really necessary? No. The audience understood what was going on, that was gratuitous. But thanks for pointing out that even theater is still written for the male gaze, Theresa Rebeck.

I have no Deep Thoughts about Death of a Salesman, except that Andrew Garfield actually does a decent not-British accent. And he is pretty when he cries, even viewed from 12 rows back.

3. We went to see This Means War the other night. I ranted about it a little to [personal profile] jmc_bks, but the more I think about it, the more annoyed I get. Cut for spoilers. If you CAN be spoiled for a rom-com. )

4. I have a big fic to edit. And carpets to vacuum. And when that's done, we're going to queue up Bronson in Netflix and watch a movie wherein Tom Hardy is an honest criminal, rather than a skeevy CIA agent-boyfriend.

Things that I've been reading:

1. Enemy Mine, by Rassaku. The Dresden Files, Harry/Marcone. Harry gets invited on a date by everyone’s favorite mob boss, and then things get weird. Canon-compliant through Small Favor, with some uses of info from Turn Coat.

2. Chrysalis, by Starcrossedgirl. Harry Potter, Snape/Harry, adult. In which Harry is a tad messed up after the war, but Snape gives him a run for his money. Or: an epic tale of PTSD, recovery and gay porn! PLEASE READ THE WARNINGS. EWE.

3. I Seem To Be A Verb (A Notting Hill AU). Inception, Arthur/Eames, WIP. Scroll to the bottom - [personal profile] bookshop has posted a link to a PDF of all the installments thus far. IDEK how many words it is, or how much longer it'll be, but at this point it's 60-some comments worth of fic. HOTTTT.

4. The Julie Collins, PI, series by Lori Armstrong. These novels are suspense with a relationship thread to them. The thing that interests me most is that Julie, like the main character Armstrong's other series, is not your average nice-girl heroine. She's a heavy drinking, chain smoking, hard living woman with a lot of flaws. Alcohol and violence are permanent fixtures in her life, and she makes no excuses for that.

Other stuffs:

- Left my phone at work yesterday. At least, I hope that's where it is. :/

- Aaron received an iPod Touch for Christmas. He is hilariously addicted to playing Scrabble and Angry Birds. And I do mean addicted. He has no room to criticize when it comes to me being dependent on my iPhone now.

- This cough & congestion needs to GTFO. So tired of needing tissues and cold medicine and drugging myself to sleep.

- Um, go Texans? IDK, I don't much care about the NFL, but it's a good excuse to hang out with friends and drink beer.

It's lack of porn that fucks countries up. Lack of porn is the root fucking cause of all global instability. (Or: Ray’s ultimate career choice is down to Brad and Walt.)

[[livejournal.com profile] schlicky, I plotted an entire alternate reality Casablanca crossover, where the civil war never ended b/c the Confederacy never invaded the Union - Ray was the equivalent of Sam, Brad was Rick, and Nate was Ilsa - but I fail at follow-through, and that's why you got something specific for the picture without much plot. Sorry, bb.]

♣ Killer Elite. IDK, I was expecting one thing, given the content of the trailers I'd seen, and what the movie delivered was... not quite that? Not bad. Clive Owen and Jason Statham got to be bad-asses, with lots of fighting, anyway.

♣ Finished reading the book about the Rehnquist/Roberts Court. I should probably move on to Oryx and Crake, since a bunch of friends are doing a bookclub and that's the next book, but I have Rafa and CJ Chivers' The Gun and Ilona Andrews' On the Edge, so I'm having a hard time settling on a single book.

♣ New seasons of Criminal Minds and Castle both started this week. I thought both were fairly predictable, but at least with Criminal Minds premiere, that story arc is finished. I’ve never been particularly fond of JJ as a character, but the way that CBS got rid of her and Prentiss was cheap, and now that they’re back hopefully the show will go back to episodic individual cases, which I much prefer.

Houston BestFest is happening in midtown this weekend! Local bands plus national ones. (Against Me! :D :D :D CAKE :D :D :D) 10-10 today, 10-8 tomorrow. Rail service is cancelled b/c of construction in the med center (again), but if parking is full near the park, there’s still a bus that will get you there.

~ Gah! I hate it when a fic I submitted for a fest is posted and I find a TON of things I want to change but I CAN'T.

But on the plus side, the [livejournal.com profile] we_pimpin exchange fics are live. Anonymous wrote me some awesome Ray/Walt fic! Then It Gets Good. Go give them some love if Generation Kill is your thing!

~ Spain vs. France Davis Cup action tomorrow! Rafa. Daveeed. I'm sad that there will be no Gael Monfils. (NGL, mostly I watch him to see if he melts down spectacularly. So much athletic possibility there, steered awry by his head.)

~ Contagion, Saturday.

~ Tattoo & Body Art Expo on Sunday, possibly?

~ Someday Bush (the band, not the former president, who is known hereabouts as the Shrub) will come to Houston and NOT play a festival at my least favorite venue in town. Sadly, the next time they're in town is not that day. *sigh*

~ Spencer Smith: big troll or biggest troll? Thanks for letting your fans know you need more than one cock in your household.

We saw HP & the HBP the other night! I thought it was going to be a regular date night, but it turned out that [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey and [livejournal.com profile] eckerlilas and [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface came to the show, too! Cut for HP rambling )

Ugh. I am so stiff and sore, it's ridiculous. My ribs hurt, and I've bruises on my hips and arms and knees where the crowd surge (and the dude next to me, who thought I was going to give up my spot front and center at the barrier to him just 'cause he overshadowed me by 8 inches and 100 lbs) pushed me against the grated part of the barrier. Screw that. My elbows are pointy and I don't mind using them. Rancid and Rise Against were worth it.

I recorded the AAR performance on Friday's Today show and watched yesterday. Dear Tyson, thanks for giving me all kinds of happy thoughts about you and Nick holed up in a cabin in the woods, maxed out on coffee and wine, to write When the World Comes Down, and for being so ridiculous as to say you have a band logo tattoo in the "chesticle area".

As Tabby has said, I do not understand why there aren't volumes more slash fic on those two.

Who's excited about the new video for Swim? Seriously, I think that song could be the song that describes my life. Also, I'm trying to decide if I want to go to the Pavilion next week to see Jack's Mannequin, even though they're not the headliners and I don't even like The Fray, the headliners.

On that note. Tell me: if you could describe yourself with one song, what would it be?

  • *facepalm* I might be considering going to Atlanta to see Green Day the first weekend in August. I'll miss them when they're in TX/LA, and there's no other weekend date that I can manage. Plus, it's [livejournal.com profile] inkandchaos's birthday that weekend, so we could hang out. Do I need to see Green Day on this tour?

  • Sometimes sports metaphors make no sense. When there's a runner on 1st and 3rd and baseball commentators say there are "runners on the corners" I don't get it. It's a DIAMOND. EVERY BASE IS A CORNER.

  • And to complete my rantiness, a science rant: I'm reading Twinkie, Deconstructed right now.The chapter about enriched cake flour (#1 ingredient of Twinkies) explains the enrichment process, including the addition of iron to prevent anemia. There are two sources: ferrous sulfate and "reduced iron". But the reduced iron the author talks about is "food-quality iron that has been reacted with carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen to get ferric oxide". I get that while the CO is present, there's probably pi-bonding to the iron that makes its electronic state not "look" like it's ferric. But ferric oxide? NOT REDUCED. In this case, the iron has one less electron than it has in ferrous sulfate.

  • Bird wings are fluttering in the chimney. Sandy is camped out in front of the fireplace, waiting for a meal. She's ridiculous.

  • Why don't I have any Veruca Salt in my iTunes library? This must be corrected.

  • Electric Touch tomorrow at Warehouse Live. Y/Y? It's been WEEKS since I had live music in my ears. Must go.

really?

I only had two new slides of data, and one of questions/items to pursue. HOW DID MY LAB MEETING TAKE AN HOUR?

Still.

It is Friday.

I am going to ogle Jensen Ackles on the big screen tonight.

J arrives tomorrow so we can be brain and real-life twins in person for a few days. :D

Eric Holder said that waterboarding is torture.

LIFE IS GOOD.

What's making you guys happy today?

Oh, hey, are we meeting before the FOB thingie on Sunday? TexMex and margaritas, y/n?
asimplechord: (colored solutions)
First thing this morning was lab meeting. Excruciatingly boring. Poke-my-eyes-out levels. The Chief even wanted to get up and leave.

Yesterday's work-related rant was muted by [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not's happy-making post and by a) constant reminders that it was Hotass Brothers Day (which ended up being *such* a disppointment), b) only one day remained until the Gym Class Heroes show (YAY!), and c) the appearance of this month's AP, complete with Rise Against interview.

I'm mostly over it. Mostly. But the day is young.

To let you know the level of yesterday's stupidity, I'm just going to ask you science-type people one question: if I told you to use isobutanol from a bottle containing a settled mixture of water and isobutanol, which layer would you take, the upper or lower?

Uh-huh. The Idiot was not clear on whether hydrocarbons were more or less dense than water, and was choosing the wrong layer. For making gels. Which he made wrong. Twice. Because apparently the label "1.5M Tris pH 8.8" really means "1.5M Tris + 20% SDS". Really.

So. TONIGHT, I AM GOING TO HAVE DRINKS AT ABSINTHE, AND LISTEN TO THE GYM CLASS HEROES, AND NOT THINK ABOUT WORK EXCEPT TO BE GRATEFUL I HAVE A JOB AND I'VE GOT THE WEEKEND OFF.

*smirk*

Is it wrong that my first thought upon receiving Ticketmaster's weekend ticketing notice is that Metro Station's tour title is possibly the least accurate thing ever? "One Hot Night In November"? If it's not sold out the day-of, I might go just to laugh at their skeeze.
asimplechord: (now that my love is gone)
1. *eyes Ike sternly* STAY! (So far, only the low-lying area where MrIris's company is located is under mandatory evacuation, and that's because of possible flooding, not because the eye is likely to pass over it. We're far enough inland and on high enough ground that we should be unaffected. But people get crazy when stuff like this happens.) 7pm: Mandatory evacuation for all of Brazoria County starting at 8am tomorrow morning. Traffic is going to be FUCKED.

2. So, we had planned on going to San Antonio this weekend because The Gourds are doing a show there Saturday. I tried to convince MrIris to leave early on Thursday so that we could catch opening night of the Why So Serious? tour - The Cab babies' opening night of their first ever headlining tour! - but he was not swayed. Then friends reminded us that he'd promised to help paint and tile their new condo, so we canceled the plans. But now they might beare being forced to evacuate Freeport to avoid the dirty side/storm surge of Ike, so we're going to San Antonio after all. I still have not convinced him to leave early Thursday, though. :( He wants to leave as early as possible Thursday, so I'm going to do what I need to do at work, then skedaddle.

3. Random quote of interest from the RNC, from someone discussing John McCain: "...he can best run the company." The guy corrected himself, but you know, I think that wasn't a slip, it was correct. The problem I have with many Republican "conservatives" is that they want government to run like a business, to be an investment, to earn them money and secure their comfortable life over others', not, you know, GOVERN. For everyone equally.

4. The Lexicon/JKR lawsuit. I'm only about half-way through the decision. Urgh, legal-ese is harder for me to parse than science-ese.

5. Watched the season premiere of Fringe last night. OMG, pseudo science AT ITS HEIGHT. Is it supposed to be the new X-Files?

6. Was I supposed to receive artwork with my copy of The Quilt, or was that sent by accident? I don't remember ordering anything but the CD, but the package came with limited edition cover art. Only one listen, all the way through, but... NRGH, Disashi. The reggae beat to Blinded By The Sun gets me past the sampling of Sunglasses At Night. My early favorite songs are Like Father Like Son and Live A Little.

+ Gabe Saporta, I kinda hate you right now. I Kissed A Boy came up on shuffle this morning, and I have not been able to stop humming it ALL DAY LONG. And it puts me in mind of Ryland Blackinton's blog about a bunch of college jocks calling him and Spencer Smith faggots when they were at MTV's Spring Break thing, and makes me want fic where Gabe's deliberately provocative in response to their insults. To go with the song, of course. My brain.

+ I would like to believe that people will see through the blatant pandering that is McCain's choice of Palin as a running mate. But I am not optimistic. Clever bastard.

+ I win at science today. :D

+ The Idiot? Does not. I can't even bring myself to type out today's contretemps.

+ &TOM MORELLO; For playing for Ralph Nader's rally, and for this:
Now, is one presidental candidate better than the other? Of course. And I'm not saying that just because I'm the half-Kenyan Harvard grad from Illinois not running for president this year.

Also, new Nightwatchman album soooon.

+ It is the Friday of a long weekend. WHO'S EXCITED?
