In lieu of a wake, I'm going to watch the Discos' DVDs tonight. Any Houston-area fans are welcome, if you can handle my messy house, complete with cat-hair tumbleweeds and stacks of unread books and CDs piled everywhere.

+ Does anyone else feel like the Northern Downpour t-shirt is way bigger than it should be, even though the tag says it's the right size? Also, the magnet set does not include enough articles. :( Need to get another poetry kit to go with it.

+ Yesterday was our 7th anniversary. I'm not sure what it says about us that in lieu of exchanging gifts, MrIris and I had tapas and wine at Mi Luna, and we're really celebrating by camping and rocking out this weekend @ Bonnaroo. (ELVIS COSTELLOOOOOOOO. *cough* Wot?)

+ Dude. That Nerf Herder album rocks. It's got Mr. Spock on it. Star Wars and Star Trek on the same album FTW.

+ Have I asked this before? Am I the only person who thinks that the opening of Hey Monday's Homecoming is ripped directly from The Bangles' cover of Hazy Shade of Winter?

+ Rise Against's Hero of War is the iTunes video of the week. ♥ ♥ ♥ That means it is free, so go download it. And then buy the album because Tim McIlrath et al. are awesome. (How many days until they are HEEEEEERRRRRE?)

+ I am still traumatized by trying to get the bird who flew down the chimney out of the house before the cats could eat it. They, on the other hand, have refused to budge from the fireplace, clearly in hopes that another feathered meal will fall from the heavens.

+ I love The Cab, but I don't know how anyone was surprised that Ian and Cash and the Alexes would part ways. [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not and I have discussed this before: Ian's musical interests clearly lay in a different direction from Alex DeLeon's. One wants to be Jimmy Page when he grows up, the other wants to be Justin Timberlake. There's nothing wrong with either desire, but they are not necessarily compatible. It's sad, but it's better that it happen amicably now than acrimoniously later.

+ There are tickets for Bonnaroo IN MY HANDS. I am, in fact, petting them and calling them my preciousssss at this very moment. It makes typing difficult.

+ You'd think family would get it right. But no. We received a check from my dad for his ACL tickets addressed to Heather Sanders. Which is not my name. I did not take MrIris's last name. Never planned to. Never considered it. Never even came up in conversation. I had a credit history in my name; I published with my name; my degree was granted to me with my name. Why should I change it to follow an antiquated tradition? I understand that casual acquaintances might not know that if they're introduced to us by our first names. But family members? Really?

+ Link courtesy of J: I find this cake disturbing on multiple levels. First because it doesn't really even look like him, but second because you'd be eating his face. (eta: this just appeared at the PATD comm, even as I was posting)

A few days back, [livejournal.com profile] redorchids picked these icons when I volunteered for her meme. So. Six icons, six drabbles. Sorry it took me so long.

HG/SS, Potterverse, 265 words )

Jepha/Bob, bandom, 247 words )

Spencer/Brendon, bandom, 127 words )

Patrick/Brendon, bandom, 150 words )

Gabe and Pete, bandom, 178 words )

Ryan gen, bandom, 156 words )

So. You can volunteer for this yourself and I'll pick 6 of your icons, or you can tell me six additional icons that should be drabble fodder for me.

+ Whatever, Amazon. I can believe your coders are overworked and rushed, but it is not a "glitch" when you remove sales rankings from books like Heather Has Two Mommies under your new "adult" materials policy but leave Playboy and explicitly heterosexual materials alone.

+ FIVE DAYS, YOU GUYS. I don't know if I can handle them covering Midtown. Even if that's not one of my favorite Midtown songs, it's one I never thought I'd hear performed live.

+ I've watched the Live In Chicago DVD how many times, and it was only tonight that I realized that Spencer sings the refrain at the end of Northern Downpour, too? Seriously, when I saw them live, I couldn't see him - both times I was on Jon Walker's side of the stage and he was blocked from my view. How did I not notice this before?

+ There was a distinct lack of hockey hair on the San Antonio Rampage bench this afternoon. This is not a complaint. In fact, the entire team ranks as the prettiest set of hockey players I've ever seen.

I FORGOT! I meant to post this the other day, but I got sidetracked.

I've been reading Persian Fire: The First World Empire And The Battle For The West, and in one of the chapters detailing Spartan life, there's a discussion of the training of boy-children, agoge.

Each youth is supervised by a paidonomos, which means herder of boys. Literally.

...you know what's going on a Pro Club Tall Tees shirt for the next tour, don't you?

asimplechord: (F*ck it)
I was trying to post every day in February, but visiting in-laws in Rockport thwarted me yesterday.

+ We attended the Lamar Volunteer Fire Dept's fundraiser, a Mardi Gras celebration. There was a band, Whiskey Bent Joseph, which looked to be two kids and their dads & friends. Seriously, the drummer boy was maybe fourteen, and the guitarist was possibly sixteen, and the guitarist. OMG, he SANG. He opened his mouth and this VOICE came, singing the blues, and I did a double take. Like, that voice is coming from that kid? And "shred" isn't the right word for blues guitar, but he was AMAZING, and it was so cute to see him look over at his dad, who was sort of fingering the frets of his own guitar, not playing but gesturing, encouraging him.

+ Eric Ronick's opening a studio in LA? With which of the Discos? (*pointedly avoids comparing canyon living to other people who apparently now live in a canyon in LA*)

+ I am not particularly a Singer fan, but sometimes his twitters and blogs just make me want to hug him. Not a creepy I'm-really-into-you kind of a hug, but an everything-will-be-alright kind of hug. He seems so needy. I'm almost embarrassed for him, which makes NO SENSE AT ALL.

+ I had more to say, but I am blanking completely. Gah. More later. Maybe.

+ [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not posted a Gabe Saporta picspam to inspire me. :D Seriously, every time I think I'm going to make some progress on my bigbang fic, some new shiny distracts me. This will maybe keep my eyes on the Gabe!shiny.

Today was a long, long day, and although there is a list of stuff I need to do, I'm procrastinating.

By looking through my "glasses/shades" subfolder in my photo files.

99% bandom. No repeats from my last glasses picspam, I hope.

Come a little closer, baby; let me look into your eyes )

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not suggested I add some non-bandom pics, but since this was already so dialup-unfriendly, she made her own post here.

- Because [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not asked for some Bob/Jepha, I have to ask: does Jepha Howard still call Salt Lake home, or has he relocated to LA or some other city?

- Why is there not more discussion of Midtown!Gabe in comparison to Cobra!Gabe? He's so earnest and SERIOUS in his Midtown lyrics, it kills me; he did such a huge volt-face to become the "you people take yourselves and music too seriously" model that he is now.

- Am I the only person who imagines Brendon joining Keltie Colleen and other assorted Rockettes for high kicks during the repeat of the chorus of Behind The Sea?

- Dear Person Who Used The Last of the Transfection Reagent And Put The Empty Box Back In The Fridge: FUCK OFF AND DIE. I'm pretty sure you're also the person who returns empty boxes of what should be sterile Pasteur pipets to the shelf, and who used all the but the last four mL of my acrylamide, Tris buffer, AND Western Works reagent and put the empty bottles back on my bench.

And on that pleasant note, I AM GOING TO LUNCH, SOMEWHERE MY LABMATES CAN'T FIND ME.

+ ♥_♥: Tim McIlrath cites Howard Zinn and Ayn Rand when discussing Appeal To Reason.

But thumbs down to punknews.org not having a copy editor educated enough to recognize the mistake in this sentence: In terms of the fact that you’re career in Rise Against feeds your family is there something about that that’s brought the music to a new level.

+ I wore my ferrous wheel shirt today, and people at work didn't get it. And then hung out at the bar with a group of chemists, biochemists, and engineers, and there were still people who didn't get it. *facepalm*

+ Apparently buying pre-sale tickets to see Metallica entitled me to a download of mp3s of their show here in Houston. And I'm always willing to share, so have them doing One, live at the Toyota Center.

+ It amuses me that iTunes automatically added the exclamation mark to Panic(!) At The Disco's name when I loaded Live In Chicago, as it did not for Pretty.Odd. THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DECIDE THEIR OWN PUNCTUATION!

I met a bunch of awesome folks, like [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey, [livejournal.com profile] xingou, [livejournal.com profile] eckerlilas, [livejournal.com profile] fiddleyoumust, and [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface on Thursday and Friday. Actually, I met more people, but I can't remember all the real names and LJ names (and someday my brain is going to explode from the cognitive dissonance of dual identity, just so you know). Others who saw the Texas RBL dates plus the PWTs/The Cab show at the Meridian on Friday will probably write epic reviews and include pictures, so I'm not going to do a whole recap.

Plain White Ts at the Meridian on 14November.

DEAR CASH, BRENDON ET AL.,

PLEASE TO BE DOING THE SAME.

LOVE, ME

I know that the Warehouse is booked for a private event that night, and I'm not sure what's going on at Verizon, but seriously, there must be somewhere they could book to do another show, right? but Verizon Wireless is NOT, according to LiveNation's calendar.

Surely they can reschedule. Right? RIGHT?
asimplechord: (glasses)
- 80 hours of the 80's? Is probably about 79.5 more hours than we really need.

- No spoilers, but a tentative two thumbs up for Traitor. I'm not convinced that title is really appropriate, and I wish there was more explanation of how Don Cheadle's character hooked up with Jeff Daniel's, historically speaking. I'm still thinking about the portrayal of the jihad and the suicide bombers and such.

- I have to ask, what's going on here? )

- I was going through The Buzz's photo albums of Buzzfest XXI today (I was checking to see if there was any new info about Buzzfest XXII), and I was... sorta surprised. There are pics of pretty much every band that was involved with that festival. Except MCR. They did NO promo for it, unlike Seether, Theory of a Deadman, Chevelle, or Three Doors Down. I know they'd been on tour for a while, but all the bands had done the previous night in Baton Rouge, and were scheduled to head up to Dallas the next day for Edgefest, and they managed to do a signing or a radio spot or something.
asimplechord: (F*ck it)
I totally got fucked today, and there were no orgasms involved. Seriously. Invitrogen screws its customers when it comes to shipping. I ordered one $12 item and a set of oligonucleotides that came to a grand total of $18.75, and they had to be shipped separately. $12.50 shipping fee for the oligos, $15 shipping for the other item, then a $22.50 "hazardous materials fee" on top of that.

They're fricken AMINO ACIDS IN STERILE BUFFERED SOLUTION. THEY AREN'T HAZARDOUS, EVEN IF YOU DRINK THEM. I guess if you inhale them, you might drown, but still.

)(*&$$&*(&^^^^####!

Today's other O.o moment goes to Panic At The Disco, who said of Glastonbury: “We don't really have a festival in the US that compares to something of that length or that many people.” (source)

Um, what?

Bonnaroo? 80k people, 4 days of music pretty much round the clock? Austin City Limits Festival? 65k people, three days with 7 or more stages? Glastonbury is the oldest and largest, definitely. But seriously. Have they not been told about these festivals? Or Coachella (admittedly smaller) or the Virgin Records Festival (younger and shorter)? I know they know about Lollapalooza.
