Apparently Don't Ask, Don't Tell only applies when you're not outing yourself deliberately for a discharge?

... I don't even know what to say about this. The entire policy is so fucked up to begin with, but then to deliberately NOT follow rules you're raising a stink over removing?

ETA: Also in the WTF category... Invitrogen must be making a FUCKTON of money. I called to see if I could wangle a discount if we buy serum supplements in bulk, and our rep offered me what is essentially 50% off. Jeez, people who work in cell biology get screwed by their suppliers if they just go with the list price.

I've been diligently pondering my BBB fic, and I wasn't going to write ANY GK fic until I had at least 5K more written. But then Off The Map came up on my iPod, and I just... is there any fan of the series who can hear or see these lyrics and not see what they're making me think about?

But I can't make a sound,
You could hear poisonous pins dropping all around like rain.
But I can ride this storm out,
Because I'm like a junkie for your smart mouth.

See I'm so far off the map the sun is shining.
While its raining and I'm draped in silver lining.
And I can row row row my boat back to shore someday.
So are you coming with me?

Anchors away.

I loosen my lips and the truth slips out.
A free ride on a forked tongue
This twine of trust is unspun.
I can start to believe that's what you need from me.
So far from what I want for (from?) you but I lock it down and we'll make due.

Yes? Yes?

And in conclusion, a screen cap that aids my distraction )

Subj: really?

"Fick is the Kerouac of our time"?

Nate, I realize you got used to taking orders while you were in the Corps, but when I mockingly suggested that you'd become a liberal dick-suck if you went to Harvard, I didn't think you'd take me seriously.

How many times did you suck Ricks' cock, to get a blog post review like that?

Listening to today's broadcast of Democracy Now made me want fic in which Jeremy Scahill has some reason to interview Nate Fick, CEO of CNAS. Brad has absolutely no reason to be apprehensive about this when he gets a Google alert about it, right? Because a) they were never with Blackwater, they're MARINES and b) Scahill's just a liberal media dicksuck. (Shut up about him setting a Google alert to Nate's name.) But somehow Scahill and Nate end up being the Beltway's new darlings, and they do the circuit of Sunday morning talking heads for weeks, taking up Nate & Brad's usual together time, and he is Not Amused.

Now back to contemplating how so much talent was packed into the tiny body of one Patrick V. Stump. And work, of course.

+ I claimed a prompt for [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine! At first I was thinking that I'd write a ficlet in a 'verse I've already written in, but I sorta want to write something different. We'll see. I'll probably bug some of you via gmail about it.

+ I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang again this year. Hopefully this time I'll actually finish the fic, since the people involved cannot disillusion me via Twitter. Plus, already outlined. Hopefully I'll keep motivated to get it all finished this time instead of letting it peter out into 5000 words of unfinished fic + an outline, like last year's.

+ [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey and [livejournal.com profile] wordsalone are responsible for my new fascination: Generation Kill. It is the most sexist, racist, politically incorrect thing I've ever seen, and it hurts to watch the stupidity sometimes, but I can't look away. I've got three episodes left to watch. Then I maybe might look for some fanfic of the Brad/Nate or Brad/Ray (they are so so married) persuasion.

+ Ugh. Do not corner me in my office and bombard me with demands before I even have my coat off on Monday morning. I usually need the first hour of the day on Monday morning to plan the week's experiments, and if you bug me, I'm pretty much guaranteed to be as unhelpful as possible. Wait an hour and you're infinitely more likely to find me amenable to your demands.

+ OMG, I *hurt* from laughing at this: Nissan Pavilion has been renamed Jiffy Lube Live. If there is a god, Gabe Saporta (and other bandom folks) will perform there this year and make ridiculous fandom-related jokes about the venue's name.

Today I was going to go to work for a half-day, to check my cells and see if the autoclave had been repaired (doubtful). I haven't done the last few days of that 30-day meme yet, either. I also need to write out the other half of the holiday cards that weren't begun until after Christmas.

Instead? I have:

1. made and consumed an entire pot of coffee

2. caught up on the [livejournal.com profile] cm_exchange fic and a bunch of Kirk/McCoy fics that were written/posted for the holidays

3. laughed at our ridiculous cats, who actually FARTED while sitting on my lap

4. written more AU not!fic (I blame this all on [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not and [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane)

5. dug through the mini's hard-drive to see if I ever actually typed up a Brendon/Frank ficlet set in the Epic Love Story verse (I hadn't)

6. downloaded BRMC's holiday gift songs (:D)

Now I'm going to go exercise, and then stop by work before we meet some friends for sushi and The Gourds at the Continental Club. Unwashed and well-read, y'all.

None of this precludes more pondering of ranch!AU fic or domestic fic. Which pretty much always ends in porn in my head, because that's just the way my brain is. (*points at last.fm's song choice* See, even my music thinks riding lessons in the ranch!AU should be considered, and then, you know, pornified.)

No, it's more not!fic. I'm unlikely to ever turn this into a complete fic, so.

Here, have some famous actor!Brendon and fan!Spencer. Unbeta'd. Txt-fic for [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not, [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface, and [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey.

~2900 words, guys. IDEK. )

I'm back!

I missed two days of the 30-day meme, so I've got that to do. And there's laundry. And the cats are pretty much not letting us out of their sight.

My bedroom was a rocking 48*F when we got here, because (like idiots) we turned the heat off instead of setting the thermostat really low. But since that's still warmer than Baltimore when we left, I shouldn't complain.

Last thought before I go make lunch and start the wash:

I was listening to the Live in Phoenix version of A Little Less Sixteen Candles right when the pilot told us to turn off electronic devices, and I have to ask if I'm the only person who thinks Patrick's Midwestern accent is really noticeable when he sings that he's dropping "I'm sorry" like you're still around? On the round O sound of sorry?

Anyway.

Laundry. Lunch. Pondering thoughts about actor!Brendon and fan!Spencer. Because I don't have enough AU universes that live inside my head.

+ I would like Chris Kane to do a show in my vicinity on a night that I do not already have music-related plans (that include three bands with the worse bad hair/bed-head ever).

+ Artist Arena still has not sent my tickets for the Cobra Starship gig. I'll give them a call on Monday to see what's up. Various posts suggest that the M&G/EE organization for this tour will fall on the side of the Dre/FOB/BND side of faily rather than the Zack-is-awesome-why-can't-he-run-all-M&Gs side of things.

+ Iowa v. Wisconsin today. There is a fair amount of trash-talk passing between our house and my in-laws' (in Iowa).

+ Why didn't I stay in San Diego an extra day and catch the AP Fall Ball there last night?

+ M'kay. Most of my traveling and stress-related stuff is done for the month, so I should get back to writing something.

+ It's [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey's fault that I have to go find a copy of Top Gun. JSYK.

+ Dear BUrie, you cannot grow a decent beard. Please stop trying. Leave that to your boyfriend drummer.

+ Finished the biography of Washington and read The Heretic's Daughter during my travels. Eh. IDK, I was really interested in THD, since it's a first-person narrative about the Salem witch trials as told by Martha Carrier's daughter. It was engaging until the end, which I felt was a let-down. Clearly, we all know how that story ended, and I wasn't expecting anything new or different about that. But the author hinted at something that ended up puffing up and dissolving like smoke, and the ending left me unsatisfied.

+ Matinee of Where The Wild Things Are tomorrow, Houston ppl? It's at the Alamo at 12:25 pm, 2:50 pm, 5:20 pm.

+ [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey is responsible for this not!fic )

Laurell K. Hamilton, author of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter books, has her own thoughts on the Twilight phenomenon. “Stephenie Meyer has come and she’s taken the genre that I sort of pioneered.[...]"

Um. Seriously? She pioneered? Because Le Fanu didn't create Carmilla, a seductive creature of the night, back in the mid-19th century? Obviously Stoker's Dracula was not an influence either. Or Coleridge's Geraldine, who was likely the basis for Carmilla.

And let's not acknowledge Stephen King's Salem's Lot or Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles.

Let's not point out that Hamilton's grasp of plot, grammar, syntax, and logic are utterly nonexistent.

Uh-huh. Obviously, she created the vampire/supernatural creature genre of literature. OBVSLY.

How can she see around her monstrously huge ego?

*sigh*

And OK, internet users behaving badly, listen up. Saying things in comments that you wouldn't say in real life? Not on. I'm not sure why people think it's OK to be rude behind a layer of anonymity, but apparently that sort of thought is widespread.
