OK, I've got a journal over at IJ now. Nothing is up yet, not even much on my profile. I suppose eventually I'll get everything transfered there, but for now most of my fic is archived at Skyehawke, OWL, or Hex Files, so I'm not too fussed about it.

My main thing? Eventually the same thing could happen at IJ as LJ. I'm not saying it to be pessimistic, I'm being realistic. So LJ isn't going to get any more money from me, but I'm comfy here, so I'm not sure I'll abandon LJ entirely either.

You're absolutely right - until fandom has a site that is only for fandom, we're at the mercy of LJ/GJ/IJ or wherever else we end up.

Yeah, and the problem is, wherever the fandom site is hosted, the host will be subject to their national laws. US, Canada, Australia, wherever.

I'm not sure what the solution is, then. Back to photocopies & handing out at Cons, like the old Star Trek days?

Welcome to IJ! You're right about being wary, however, going on what we know already, GJ has already suspended people for similar reasons as LJ and the IJ admin posted that without a court order, there'd be no deletion of journals.
InsaneJournal Administrator states that unless there is a DMCA violation or a court order to remove content, InsaneJournal will not delete journals. The link is provided so you may read IJ's administrator's journal.

It's a much nicer lip service welcome there. Scribblit is being hosted in Canada but their laws are similar to that of Australia, therefore, more strict than those in the U.S. which doesn't bode well for HP fandom. Such a mess. As a mod, I've been turned off my GJ's correspondence with us. They are tetchy and do not seem to want us either. So I know you didn't ask for it but my leanings are toward IJ when speaking of moving HP fandom.

Thanks for the link. :)

I've read the IJ statement. I just have no faith that it won't change if enough pressure is applied.

I'm going to try to transfer everything -- I have a Mac, though, and I don't think LJ Archive works for them. I dunno, I don't think I've written anything chan-ish, although I could be wrong. So I'm not feeling pressure to OMGchangeeverythingnow.

Talk to [livejournal.com profile] nessime_lisen. She has a program to migrate a comm with Mac OS. I don't know how it works with individual ljs but that'd be one way to go.
Her complete instructions can be found here at the [livejournal.com profile] hp_mods comm. As a mod, you should be able to join if you aren't already a member.
