Harry's footsteps pattered down the stairs and off into the distance. A few seconds later, the sound of the door opening and closing echoed up the stairwell.

Fred sat silently, contemplating the door through which Harry had made his exit. George leaned with one hand on the window frame, watching early morning traffic down on the Alley, sipping his tea and letting the silence stretch. He had no doubts, no concerns about what they had started with their invitation to Harry, but he knew without asking that Fred did. He could tell by the set of Fred's shoulders, the way his head tilted to the right, that Fred was thinking not-quite-happy thoughts.

Although they had both been with other people before, they had never shared another partner. Harry was their friend, their coworker, almost family; another Gryffindor with a hidden streak of cunning, he was appealing in a slim, dark, stronger-than-he-appeared way, and he was obviously attracted to them. Still, George was fairly certain that Fred was wondering if their spur-of-the-moment decision had been a wise one.

"Do you think Ginny'll find out?" Fred's question was not the one George had expected.

"Mmm… possibly. I don't think Harry will tell her, but she's so determined to have him, she'll notice when he continues to put her off."

"She won't take it well."

"No. And when she realizes he's interested in blokes, her reaction will be even worse."

"Mmm." Fred lifted his teacup and considered that idea for a few sips. Then, "You think Harry will want more? Or was that just curiosity?"

"I think our Harry is only beginning to decide what he wants from life, and seeing us together flipped a switch for him."

Solemn brown eyes, mirrors of his own, scanned George's face, searching for some clue.

"And if he decides he wants us?"

"I suppose we can accommodate him. No hardship, is it?" George's grin was cheerfully lascivious, but there was no answering smile from Fred. His gaze had dropped to fix on fingers that were worrying the cold toast on his plate, scattering crumbs on the low table in front of the sofa.

George hadn't seen Fred this tentative since his first hesitant admittance that he sometimes thought of the pair of them as a couple.

"Do you not want to…?"

"No, it's not that. It's just… when we were with other people before, it was, you know, separate. Knowing you were out with Lee and what you might have been doing with him isn't quite the same thing as seeing it. Or sharing it. I mean, after we started doing this–" Fred waved his hand in a vague gesture that encompassed them both "–didn't it bother you to know I was still seeing Angelina sometimes?"

Disconcerted by Fred's inability to describe their relationship aloud, George frowned.

"Honestly? I hated to share you with her. Not because I was jealous, but because it bothered me that you would be with someone for the wrong reason. You seemed to be doing it to make her happy, not because you wanted it."

"It wasn't like that!" Fred sounded a bit defensive now. "I liked her well enough, and I couldn't just leave her flat."

"If you say so."

"Hmph. So you weren't jealous? You wouldn't mind if I went home with some random stranger?"

George sighed. He sometimes wondered if Fred deliberately misunderstood him, simply to hear him say things aloud. Once the words were spoken, it was real, undeniable.

"You're not listening, or maybe just not understanding. I've known how we're meant to be since we were twelve. You're a part of me. Part of me is yours forever, no matter who else we shag, together or apart."

Fred looked so vulnerable, so exposed, that George couldn't help but sympathize. He'd had years of watching Fred and Angelina to come to grips with the concept, hadn't he? Fred's understanding of the full scope of their unusual relationship had come years later. Sometimes it seemed obvious, to George at least, that he hadn't given the repercussions and nuances of their choice much thought before acting.

He pushed away from his spot by the window and sat down on the sofa next to Fred, pulling him into the curve of his arm. He turned them and leaned forward so that their foreheads rested together, allowing direct eye contact. Fred wouldn't meet his gaze at first. Instead, his eyes flicked down and away. Finally he looked up, and was caught by the honesty, candor, and emotion in George's identical eyes.

No more words were necessary.

This was actually the perfect follow-up to the previous 2 ficlets. =) George being sure of who and what they are, but with Fred having some doubts about what they'd just done, it shows their own personalities. It was really cute.

Thanks! I'm trying to mix actual story-telling and character development (new things for me!) into the Fred/George stuff I've written in the past.
