I have opinions about the news that's in the headlines, but all I'm going to say is that I hope that everyone who lost a loved one on 9/11/01 or when the USS Cole or the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya were bombed feels some closure. I'd like to believe that this means we'll extract ourselves from the untenable, unsustainable military conflicts in which we embroiled ourselves in the name of capturing OBL, but I have sincere doubts on that subject.

IN HAPPIER NEWS. [livejournal.com profile] pjvilar posted a picture that makes me FINALLY feel the urge to write, for the first time in months. If I can squeeze it in around my work hours, which have once again grown to encompass far more than the 40 for which I am paid.

AND. Seriously, did we magick Panic! At The Disco into being with our will, bandom? Because this video. SERIOUSLY. It's a half-dozen different musicals and Disney movies for a single 3-minute song, and I LOVE IT. I cannot wait for June. Or for the autumn tour with Black Cards and Neon Trees.

not!fic amnesty

I have a ton of random snippets of fic that will never be rounded out into actual stories. In an effort to clear my hard-drive (and because my OCD and antisocial tendencies needed indulgence after a week in a loud, disorganized, people-occupied place) I spent the last hour deciding what to toss and what I might reasonably work on. That stuff is staying.

These are the snippets of stuff that I finally admit will never be written in their entirety.

Bandom, Brendon/Spencer, Pure Country AU. Outlined, but only one scene actually written. )

Brendon/Regan/Shane. Yeah, this is NEVER getting finished. Ever. )

Brendon/Spencer, bandom firefighter/EMT AU )

GK, Brad/OFC with Brad/Nate UST )

there aren't enough gods to thank that it's Friday. and it's nearly over.

Things that made me :DDD in the last 24 hours:

1. MCR (as seen pretty much all over my f-list). THANK YOU. I was beginning to fear that we'd NEVER get the new album. Mikeyway working the blond! Geeway and that fuschia mess (if ever there were a hot mess, he is it in the vid)! Frankie's all long-haired and hot again! (NGL, I totally would've lost Iero sex-chicken while he was in Leathermouth mode, but apparently becoming a daddy of twins is working out well for him.)

2. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

3. BRMC released a live session at iTunes. (Also, I get to see them twice this week.)

4. Luuuuuudo in less than one week.

Things that made me :D then :(

1. The Dear Jack Foundation First Annual Benefit Concert was announced. This is a charity that I definitely support for a variety of reasons, and both Jack's Mannequin and Something Corporate will be performing so I'd love to go, but it's in LA, on a date that I absolutely cannot travel.

Things that made me >:/

1. Work. Dear Tutorial Grad Student: I should not have to tell you to put some damn gloves on EVERY OTHER MINUTE. Also, if you've weighed something out and it's too much, DO NOT put it back into the reagent bottle, especially if it's touched a surface you touched with your bare, naked fingers. And FYI, that thing you just weighed out is a neurotoxin in high enough quantities. I WASN'T KIDDING WHEN I TOLD YOU TO PUT ON SOME EFFIN' GLOVES.

2. Work. Yes, I'm listing it twice. Because I'm just that annoyed by the introduction of a new student for me to guide on a project that does not dovetail with mine AT ALL, at a time when The Chief is pushing me to finish the last replicates of experiments so we can get another paper out before the end of October.

3. I'm taking the Snowflake for service (again) tomorrow. More $$$ unbudgeted. The air-conditioning is blowing hot air. Which wouldn't be a big deal except this is Houston in September, and it's still supposed to be over 90F for the next week, at least.

fic post!

Title: In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. (In practice there is.)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] irisgirl12000
Rating: adult
Word count: 1439
Pairing: always-a-girl!Spencer/Brendon
Disclaimer:This is a work of fiction. Unless Spencer Smith really has been a girl all this time. If you are or know the folks whose likenesses inspired this fic, you should click the back button. And also? Listen to Mikey.
Prompt: From the [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine exchange: Brendon and Spencer, in which one of them is a girl. Genderswap or always-a-girl, must include girl!oral.
A/N: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface and [livejournal.com profile] harriet_vane for the read-through. Title by Yogi Berra. Also, this is bb!Discos. Does that need a warning?

A couple of hours of practice is worth ten sloppy rounds.

+ What, precisely, is Joe Trohman going to fill four hours of air time with every week?

+ Left work early today. Felt like crap. So tired of feeling feverish and run-down.

+ BUT. I got a really cool result this week. :)

+ Heading down toward Rockport this weekend to see the grandparents-in-law. Um, yay?

+ Have been immersed in Generation Kill. Read some fic, read Nate Fick's book, watched some YouTube of the "making of", rewatching the miniseries. NGL, I could watch ASkars pretty much non-stop and not ever get tired of him.

+ My [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine fic is plotted (if one can use "plot" when really it's just porn) in my head. Now I just need to actually type it out.

we should hit up jose o'flanigan's

+ I claimed a prompt for [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine! At first I was thinking that I'd write a ficlet in a 'verse I've already written in, but I sorta want to write something different. We'll see. I'll probably bug some of you via gmail about it.

+ I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang again this year. Hopefully this time I'll actually finish the fic, since the people involved cannot disillusion me via Twitter. Plus, already outlined. Hopefully I'll keep motivated to get it all finished this time instead of letting it peter out into 5000 words of unfinished fic + an outline, like last year's.

+ [livejournal.com profile] vic_ramsey and [livejournal.com profile] wordsalone are responsible for my new fascination: Generation Kill. It is the most sexist, racist, politically incorrect thing I've ever seen, and it hurts to watch the stupidity sometimes, but I can't look away. I've got three episodes left to watch. Then I maybe might look for some fanfic of the Brad/Nate or Brad/Ray (they are so so married) persuasion.

+ Ugh. Do not corner me in my office and bombard me with demands before I even have my coat off on Monday morning. I usually need the first hour of the day on Monday morning to plan the week's experiments, and if you bug me, I'm pretty much guaranteed to be as unhelpful as possible. Wait an hour and you're infinitely more likely to find me amenable to your demands.

+ OMG, I *hurt* from laughing at this: Nissan Pavilion has been renamed Jiffy Lube Live. If there is a god, Gabe Saporta (and other bandom folks) will perform there this year and make ridiculous fandom-related jokes about the venue's name.
asimplechord: (science!)
2010-01-04 10:45 pm

(insert witty title here)

+ I'm watching the Fiesta Bowl. I don't have strong feelings about who to cheer for, but I feel like Boise St. has gotten fucked by the BCS and larger conferences, since they've tried to strengthen their schedule by advertising that they will pay to come to any of the top-conference schools, and all those schools decline. Because if Boise St. plays them and beats them (the way they shellacked Oklahoma a couple of years ago), maybe there's some validity to the argument that the BCS is all about money and TV rights, not so much about what team is actually the best. If it were, there'd be a playoff system, and the team that wins this game and the winner of the Texas/Alabama (which I mostly want the Tide to roll, simply because I'm contrary) game would play each other.

+ Urgh, work. It's always hard to go back after a week off. But I suppose today could have been worse.

+ [livejournal.com profile] bandomvalentine is open for prompts and for writers and artists to volunteer. Go check it out!

+ Do I care enough about The Cab and Hey Monday to buy presale tickets for the spring AP Tour? (Because I definitely do not care enough about Never Shout Never.)

+ Sandy is the contrariest cat ever. Dante was curled up at my feet on the sofa, and she deliberately pounced from her spot on Aaron's lap (over in his LaZBoy) onto Dante, just to make him roll over and yowl and abandon the sofa. Seriously: bitch. As soon as he was up, she hopped back over to Aaron.

+ Why is Jonathan Rhys Meyers hurting me by forcing me to watch John Travolta on-screen with him in From Paris, With Love? No, really, WHY? *toddles off to watch Velvet Goldmine*

recs from a mix of fandoms (mostly hosted at AO3 for Yuletide)

Anne of Green Gables fandom: Rilla Blythe's Wedding: A Not Entirely Comprehensive Account. I cried and cried when I read Rilla of Ingleside as a teenager. But this story has a tone that acknowledges the grief that the Blythe family and the world are trying to forget in the wake of World War I, and at the same time, makes it RIGHT. (Plus, the gossiping of the Four Winds/Glen St. Mary's matrons is spot-on.)

Sports Night fandom: The Offside Rule. This is Dan/Casey fic, and I love the banter. Plus, SOCCER.

Bandom: One Step Forward (Two Steps Back). This is early-Panic fic. It was written for the 2009 Bandom Big Bang, but since it's a sort of weird pairing (Jon Walker/Brent Wilson), I didn't read it for the longest time. I like the outsider view of the Discos and TAI as they got popular and started to fall apart.

Tennis RPF: Ferris Wheel Lights On. Novak/Rafa. Not explicit. I pretty much love any fic that captures Rafa's playfulness and young wisdom.

Atlas Shrugged fandom: Breaking Dawn. Oh, man. There is so much I like about this fic. It's what we DON'T see in the book when Hank Reardon leaves "civilization" for Galt's Gulch, what happens when he gets there. I love the job he takes, I love where he ends up living, becoming better friends with Francisco D'Anconia, and there's a scene with John Galt that is just perfect.

Temeraire fandom: Gemology. Emily Roland is going to be an amazing Long-wing dragon-captain when she grows up. But this is not that story. This is about the garnets that Laurence's mother sent her, and about what they mean.

+ Dear vendor: If you cannot be bothered to spell "competitive" correctly on your advert, why should I pay you to tend to expensive equipment?

+ It is lunchtime. I am going to go read [livejournal.com profile] sunsetmog's new fic, and the Dean/Castiel that [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not linked me to this AM. And think about shower-sex. Just because.

+ One more week until the season premiere of Criminal Minds. (Yes, I'm counting down.)

five scenes (girl!Brendon drabbles)

Five Scenes
set in the About A Girl 'verse
gen

These were written for [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not's meme. They are in chronological order. The first one takes place during the course of the main fic, but the others are tidbits of the as-yet unwritten future that lives in my head.

Feel free to ask questions if there's something you're not clear on; I have so much backstory and future for this story in my head, and I'm not sure it'll ever be written properly.

As always, this is fiction, and is meant to imply absolutely nothing about the folks whose names are utilized.

apparently it is WIP amnesty night?

So here, FIC!

Blaze
Brendon/Ian || ~950 words || teen
written via text message and IM by me and [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not, self-beta'd
fake, as in not real and never happened
Set around the time Ian auditioned to join The Cab? IDK, the IMs started like this: you know that Ian crashed with Bden & Shane, b/c Shane has family obligations, he has to let him. And Shane's busy with work, so it's up to Bden to keep him entertained.

*hands*

Anyway. Here are snippets from two of the WIPs on my laptop. Tell me which I should work on.

not-skeezy-Gabe, would have been my BigBang fic )

Or untitled Brendon/Spencer fic )

There are bunches more unfinished fics - biting fic? Criminal Minds/bandom cross-over? Weasley twin/Harry potions incident? Jensen Ackles/Chris Kane porn? All just waiting for me to get inspired and finish them.

Tell me which you'd like to read.

A Thousand Words
Brendon/Spencer, Shane
adult
1565 words
Fiction. Not meant to imply that these people are doing this. If you are them or know them, please don't read this. Or tell me.
Written originally via text message for [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface on her birthday, cleaned up by [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not for public consumption. Any remaining mistakes should be blamed on me alone.

Brendon's voice is calm, serious, when he says, "We get the memory card. No copies, nothing uploaded on any computer but mine or Spencer's."

Because, as I just told [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not, everything ends in Brendon/Spencer in my head.

Disclaimer: FALSEHOODS AND LIES! Not meant to imply anything about the people whose names are used.
Summary: Werewolf AU of sorts. Tom has been on his own since getting kicked out of William's pack.

Srsly, guys. Werewolf fic. The wolves are sort of Dresden Files in nature. Mostly this is a finding-your-place kind of fic. And it's really all b/c of [livejournal.com profile] shutyourface, so thank or blame her for seeding our brains with the idea, as you see fit.

drabbles! (mostly bandom)

A few days back, [livejournal.com profile] redorchids picked these icons when I volunteered for her meme. So. Six icons, six drabbles. Sorry it took me so long.

HG/SS, Potterverse, 265 words )

Jepha/Bob, bandom, 247 words )

Spencer/Brendon, bandom, 127 words )

Patrick/Brendon, bandom, 150 words )

Gabe and Pete, bandom, 178 words )

Ryan gen, bandom, 156 words )

So. You can volunteer for this yourself and I'll pick 6 of your icons, or you can tell me six additional icons that should be drabble fodder for me.

my job here is done

So, J's not so much into music, really, but I converted her to the Church Of Hot Addiction by taking her to see Cobras and Cabbabies at the RRRGL tour. I got this email from her today:

It is entirely your fault that I’ve had Patrick Stump’s voice in my head all day, singing “Nobody wants to hear you sing about tragedy…”. It won’t. Go. Away.

Would I ever had listened to Fall Out Boy without your encouragement? I doubt it.

1. Random stranger sat down next to me on the light rail and started talking to me about the book I was reading (Lawrence Lessig's The Future Of Ideas: "Oh, that looks serious. Is it?").

a) I had my iPod earbuds in my ears and an open book in my hands, which are clear signs that I'm not interested in idle chatter.

b) Unless you're *with* someone, you do not just start conversation on the commuter rail. It's just one of those things, and as far as I can tell (from SLC to Chicago to DC) it's pretty universal. Public transportation faux pas, okay?

2. Dear Fandom,
Please keep amusing me with (y)our over-invested ideas and interpretation of public twitters (without considering that it's entirely possible that they're communicating OFF twitter). Honestly, this almost as good as the OMG-they're-so-mean-to-Bden-the-band-is-going-to-break-up flailing that happened when the PR stuff for Pretty.Odd went down last year. And as far as I can see in the pics Shane's posted? Panic is still Discoing.

3. Again, fandom: I don't understand outrage about last week's SPN episode. If we can't laugh at our obsessions, maybe we *are* that creepy.
