Just received a comment on a Harry Potter fanfic that I was writing and posting serially four years ago.

FOUR YEARS AGO. It's Snarry, with background Harry/Snape/Hermione and implied future Hermione/Charlie Weasley. OBVIOUSLY totally AU, since it was plotted, outlined, and mostly-written before Deathly Hallows came out.

(I write "plotted". But you know how bad I am with plot; it was mostly porn, with a little bit of plot.)

If you've been around here any length of time, you probably know that the release of book 7 induced sincere dismay in Harry Potter canon, dismay that fandom did not overcome. I posted a note at the bottom of the latest chapter that I was suffering serious fandom apathy and it was unlikely that the story would ever be finished.

Someone asks NOW if I'm going to regain my interest and finish it?

Um, honestly? DOUBTFUL.

ETA: Also? Going through some of those old fic posts. Some of my early writing efforts - and later ones as well - make me shudder in horror. How did I think it was OK to write that? Just. Ugh, self, what were you thinking? I guess what my first composition professor told me is true: writing is like any other exercise, it gets better with practice.

I love getting comments on old fics (Reciprocity gets a surprising number of comments still; I love it!) but not when they ask for more. I think you and I are way too alike when it comes to not finishing things. (The Epic Love Story? What?)

Porn with a little bit of plot is totally acceptable in my book! :)

I'm just... sort of amazed that anyone *found* that fic, you know? Every once in a while I get a comment on the Bill/Hermione fic I wrote for an exchange, or the creepy Narcissa/Lucius written for a different exchange, and that's sort of cool b/c they were... not *rare* pairings, but not commonly-written ones, so I'm always surprised when someone reads them.

The Epic Love Story was at an okay place where we left it, though. There were still two chapters of this fic, completely outlined, one of them ~70% written, when I was so appalled by Book 7 that I decided I was done with it.

I had one chapter to go on one of my hp fics and it was even mostly written and I just dropped it b/c it no longer interested me. I'm so easily distracted.

You are awesome; I am not surprised that people find your fics!

Also? I was just going through my tags. I wrote A LOT of Snarry and Drarry fic. And drabbles. And holy fuck, there's some Jensen/Tom and Jensen/Chris Kane and Jared/Chris fic. And hockey RPS, ffs.

Why did I never create a masterpost for all my writing?

At least your stuff is tagged? Dude, Jared/Chris YES! *happy sighs* good times. :)

I think nearly everything I wrote in HP fandom at least had Harry/Draco in the background.

I have an entirely written Jensen/Chris pornlet in the notebook that traveled to and from Australia on vacation with me. In 2007. And I still haven't typed it up for formatting and posting. There's a half-written Harry/Weasley twins interlude in there too. Seriously, I am SO BAD about follow-through when something loses its shine.

LOL, TOTALLY UNRELATED: the commentator for this tennis match just concluded a sentence with, "Nadal's balls dropping."

Um. I know what he MEANT. But I have the sense of humor of a 16-yr-old sometimes, so. Yeah.

New movie must've whetted folks' appetites. I got a comment on the weekend, totally outta the blue, on a one-off story from about -yeah- four years ago (written for a specific prompt for someone in some writing fest) and the entirety of said comment? "Oh PLEASE tell me there's a sequel to this!"

Er, that would be a "no, sorry".

OTOH, someone new found Beaters&Seekers yesterday and read the whole thing in one go. :D

J & I are going to see the new movie when she's here this weekend. I'm not sure it'll prompt me to be active in fandom, but I'm looking forward to seeing Snape on the big screen again.

*happy sigh*

Beaters & Seekers. I need to re-read that again. :D

I'm just back from my first viewing, actually. :D I felt a pull of writing the twins again, but with other commitments being what they are right now, I don't think I'd have the time to coax myself back into the world and headspace...

The thing's a marked improvement over the adaptation of HBP, but I couldn't help sitting there thinking (several times) "Why couldn't they have given every book the two-parter treatment?". 'Tis ridiculous they're making us wait so long betwixt one half and the next though. This is half a movie! And we're expected to wait until July?! Fuckers.

"Why couldn't they have given every book the two-parter treatment?"

I asked myself that. And I also wondered: if a director could see that Deathly Hallows needed to be split into two, why couldn't JKR, who instead crammed Harry's story and Grindelwald & Dumbledore's story into one volume?

I love getting comments on older stories, but yeah, this particular commenter didn't think his/her question through, it seems. Four years is a long time for a writer and I sincerely doubt that I'd be able to go back to my unfinished HP WIP about Bill Weasley after all those years, especially after having lost my interest in that fandom completely at some point, so I totally understand your bafflement.

I think you're correct - my head is in a totally different space, writing-wise now. The style of my writing has changed, and it's really hard to imagine that I'd be able to go back now.

From: [identity profile] idrilka.livejournal.com
Yeah, exactly. If I were to go back to one of those old stories, I'd have to rewrite it from the beginning to suit my current style of writing, otherwise it'd be just too jarring.

Not to mention that I simply burned out after a few years in that fandom (the fact that I despised both The Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows certainly didn't help the matters XD) and I don't intend to go back. But, God, does that bring back memories... HP was my first fandom that I actively participated in.

Yeah, HP was the first fandom I was really active in, and I met MANY fabulous people online and in RL through it. I miss it, in a vague way - I was a moderator on an archive that was really strict, in terms of canon compliance, grammar, etc., and I miss fandom writing having some of those standards -but I don't miss the shipping and the wank. And I cannot agree more - books 6 and 7 were *such* disappointments, squandering so many possibilities.

Exactly. About 80% of my flist consists of people I met through the Polish HP fandom, and we are still very close after all those years, visit each other whenever we can, and this is also exactly how I met my best friends, people that I love as much as my family and know I can count on, because they never let me down. And I have a lot of fondness for the HP fandom, precisely because of the people who were involved in it. But the last two books were horrible and the amount of badfic became overwhelming, and the HP fandom and I parted ways amicably in the end.
