I know, right? I started with this txt to Lesa

They met bc Pete drags them to aparty after the homecoming game, and Spencer knows they're not cool enough to be there- they're in the pep band, ok, they're not jocks, and he feels SO out of place- but when one of the linebackers starts picking on Bden and Spencer is afraid they are both abt to get broken into tiny pieces bc Pete is nowhere to be found, Mark steps in.

And now it is a fullblown AU in my head.

Aaaaa! (I just said that out loud, too, aaaaa!) That is fantastic. Everyone likes Mark, he's a senior and he has awesome parties, and he really has no business even knowing who Spencer and Brendon are, but then he STEPS IN.

Luck is totally not with Spencer, bc normally Bden would be busy flirting with the cheerleaders- they just roll their eyes at him, bc they knew him through his sisters, who had both been on the squad when they were in school. But Bden is right there, nodding excitedly when he hears the invite, and so does half the rest of the pep band, and they can't TURN DOWN that sort of thing without serious social repercussions.

Of course they want to go to the cool parties! Brendon as always struck me as a kid who, in high school, was super aware of his own uncoolness, but in no way let it stop him from saying and doing super uncool stuff around cool people.

Yes! Like, he knew he was not cool and his behavior made it worse; it wasn't that he didn't WANT to be cool, he just knew it was unattainable, so he was his totally geeky, uncool self.

My armchair analysis of his awkwardness at m&gs is that it comes partly from being that uncool kid and and KNOWING he was uncool and maybe trying to filter it slightly (bc aren't his fans, minus the older women, cool kids who get to go to shows and such?) but also from being the youngest kid. Like, he was so used to being told to be quiet and not interrupt, being talked over and around by his older siblings, that he never learned how to introduce conversation, to perform everyday social activities, without someone there to shush or rescue him. And Spencer, being the oldest child, *did* learn those things. If that makes any sense.

Yes! Additionally, my Mormon friend assures me that Mormon kids are taught from a very early age to defer, to agree, and to listen in conversation. It's a huge, huge thing to be polite and deferential. That probably makes it harder to strike up conversations with strangers later in life.

I suspect high school Brendon always realizes he's being geeky a second after he's already done it. Luckily Pete and Mark both think it's kind of hilarious.

Mark thinks it is AWESOME, because other than Pete (who is ridiculous and outrageous partly in an effort to combat suburban ennui, but also because he just doesn't give a shit if people think he's not cool) no one else he knows is as unapologetic and enthusiastic about his interests, even though they are kind of geeky interests.

You know, I lived in Salt Lake City for three years, with friends, neighbors, and colleagues who were LDS, and I can count on my hands with digits to spare the number of times their children, who ranged from toddler to teenaged, initiated conversation, other than a polite greeting. But I never really connected that with Brendon before now.

As soon as my friend mentioned that I went, "Oh! THAT'S why he's such a shitty interviewee!" and she said yeah, it was drilled into her and everyone she knew as kids that you wait for someone else to answer.

...this just makes me want a fic set during this tour where Brendon is pining for Spencer secretly, and he and Dallon have long conversations about how hard it is to shake some of the things they learned as Mormon kids, no matter how badly they want to.

I would very much like to read his POV of the GMBs on tour. Ian doesn't even notice their GMBness any more bc he's toured with them before, plus he lived in a van with The Cab. But Dallon is confused, bc Bden has a girlfriend, or so he thought, and Spencer had a gf, but they are like the oldest married couple ever.

Yes! They are SO BOYFRIENDLY; they go out together, they talk to their dog together on the phone, they order for each other when they go to dinner, they have all these stupid injokes that no one, not even Zack, can follow. He keeps walking on the bus very carefully, thinking that THIS TIME will be the one where he catches them making out and they look sheepish, but no, it's just Beatles Guitar Hero again. (There was that ONE time Dallon woke up and they were asleep cuddling on the couch, but everyone else seemed to think that was normal.)

He tries to explain it to his wife, but she's like, "Bwah?" so he asks Darren if he's just being ridiculous or if there's something really going on. Darren laughs and laughs, and Dallon ends up hanging up on him. When he logs into gmail later that afternoon, there's an email from Darren with "you tell me!" in the subject line, and when he clicks on the link that is the sole line in the body, it takes him to a LiveJournal page filled with photos of Brendon and Spencer draped, plastered, posed, and piled on top of each other.

Darren is the least helpful friend EVER.
