How much do I love the great big *fuck you* just delivered to the Bush administration?

More than I can possibly say. I know that Hamdan's sentence of five months (rather than life) is meaningless in that the US govt will still insist he's an enemy combatant and not release him. But. BUT.

He was acquitted of actual conspiracy, the most serious charge. He was convicted of war crimes for being a DRIVER, not because he actually did anything wrong. And that's only because of the ex post facto application of the Military Commissions Act of 2006. Which was basically written as a rebuttal to the Supreme Court's decision in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld.

They probably won't release him, yes. I'm glad that that was all the time he got, though--I was talking to my brother last night about this, mostly about how ridiculous the whole thing was. He's a driver. That's it.

I know. It's utterly ridiculous. The thing that's even worse is that all of this happens after nearly 7 years of incarceration, probably subjecting him to torture, and it led to nothing. It wasn't just inhumane in an "end justifies the means" sort of way, it was pointless. It was counterproductive.

I love that they're actually allowed to try them now, instead of just locking them up. And I pretty much love ANY "fuck you" to the Bush administration. Even though the new X-Files movie was disappointing, it had a great anti-Bush moment; pretty much saved the movie for me.

That was one of the few redeeming moments of the movie. I was sadly disappointed by its mediocrity. (Is that a word?)

He needed money to feed his family. In a just world, he should never have been held or sentenced.
