Hel-loooo, Monday!

Got my eye on the weather channel. I'm actually hoping that Edouard hits us (at its current strength, none of that strengthening into an actual hurricane, tyvm) because we need rain in a bad way.
Anyway. If you're new here...
I am 34 yrs old. I work as a post-doc/lab manager in a pharmacology lab at the UT med school. Mostly I like science, although my current field of research is not the field I love most. It's what's funded, so.
People I mention frequently:
MrIris - my husband, who indulges me shamelessly
J - my twin sister; we really are Brain Twins sometimes, in addition to being identical twins physically; we email back and forth pretty much every day now that we live 1200 miles apart
The Chief - my boss, a decent enough sort; he lets me blare my hippy, ultra-liberal radio shows in lab, which makes me happy, and he currently wonders just how many band t-shirts I have (a few, okay? and since I can wear whatever I want within reason and safety standards, I see no reason not to sport them in lab)
Idiot Post-doc - a lab mate who is not, in technical fact, a post-doc; the Chief didn't know that until after he hired him
I rant about all sorts of RL things, from politics to my idiot lab-mates to my house [I live in the 'burbs of Houston and I hate a) being a homeowner and b) the 'burbs], in between flailing about my spouse, our cats, music, books, TV shows, and movies.
If I'm going to rant extensively or post pics, I try to do it under a cut and with a tag to let you know, just in case you're not interested.
I'm an atheist. I have no problems with other folks' faith, I just have none of my own, and no patience for proselytizing.
I'm thinking of leaving the Democratic party because it's really no better than the GOP. I don't think Obama is really going to make any changes, although he's probably a lesser evil when compared to McCain. Not that I think he doesn't mean well, but I think the corporatocracy has a hold on him already, and the two-party system as we have it in the US is fundamentally broken when it comes to anything except supporting big business.
I'm sort of peripherally involved in multiple fandoms, but right now bandom has eaten my brain. There are probably fifty half-written stories spanning five fandoms sitting on my Mini's hard drive. I have no idea when or if some of them will ever be finished.
My attention span is relatively short, but if you poke me, I'll try to stay on topic.
Ooh, pretty men doing pretty things and singing pretty songs, SHINY!
Um, what was I saying?
I have definite opinions about lots of things (pineapple doesn't belong on pizza; real sports are only played on real grass; the Yankees are an abomination; the Big Ten will always be underrated because the teams beat up on each other like no other football conference; cooked raisins are the devil) and you're welcome to disagree, but please do so politely.
If you're only here for fanfiction, my fic only journal is
iris_scribbles. I won't feel bad if you only want that -- not everyone wants to read posts concerning my angst about trading principles for financial security or working in a branch of academic science that isn't really my True Scientific Love.
Feel free to ask questions. I'll probably even answer them.

Date: 2008-08-04 09:34 pm (UTC)BEACH, REAL BEACH? I WISH! (The thing a few miles south of here doesn't count. The water is like bath water, and it sorta freaks me out. Plus, it's the Gulf, not the Atlantic or Pacific.)
I'm going to Iowa weekend after next, though. We'll have a wild and crazy time out in the cornfields.

Date: 2008-08-05 02:49 am (UTC)Iowa, huh? Hey, I'm all about some field parties, but corn freaks me out. He Who Walks Behind The Rows still scares me.
