we win at science today

I probably shouldn't get excited until I know it's reproducible.
BUT I JUST GOT A RESULT THAT DESERVES A HAPPY DANCE.
And there is no one here to share it with me. Because the grad students in my department are slackers. Even The Chief is gone for the day.
And just because I can't believe this earned an article in NEJM, have you seen that wearing personal stereo earphones in a thunderstorm can conduct the lightning into the head? Perhaps one should not be out walking in the middle of an electrical storm. Just, you know, a thought.
Here is the NEJM article, although I don't know if anyone without a subscription (personal or institutional) can access it.

BTW, with the thunderstorm thing - today, in Ottawa, 5 teens were injured when the tree they were standing beside was struck by lightning. Don't they teach us to stay away from trees in a thunderstorm?
Can you tell I couldn't decide which icon was most appropriate??

Yeah, I thought we learned to stay away from tall things, especially tall things in the middle of empty fields and such, in thunderstorms. But hey, maybe there's some newfangled notion about the trees being good conductors. Safety in numbers? Shelter in the shadow of it? I'm running out of cliches, here. :D

Date: 2007-07-12 12:15 pm (UTC)Now just got to make sure I can repeat it. Some days I love science. Yesterday/today happen to fall into that category. :D
