Hat-tip to J for this link. The five-second rule investigated. Dude. Who funds this sh*t, and are they accepting grant applications right now?

RE: Chris Cornell, Live in Seattle
Oh, to have been there! Still, webcast is a beautiful thing. Two hours of beauty. Yeah, yeah, I know. Repeating myself. But seriously. He sounds as good live as he does recorded, and I appreciate that alot. I've been sorely disappointed by Shinedown some acts that I thought would be rockin' and were rotten.

Opinions on the new material? I liked it, but haven't gone back to re-listen and really hear the lyrics. I was grooving to the not-acoustic version of Billie Jean even more than the unplugged version, too.

Wish he'd done Spoonman instead of Jesus Christ Pose or Rusty Cage, but heh, any Soundgarden is good Soundgarden IMO. Can't say the same for the Temple of the Dog. Srsly, I loved them (Vedder and Cornell singing, what's not to love?) and Say Hello to Heaven is a gorgeous song, but Cornell and his guitarist couldn't quite do justice to Hunger Strike. Yogi's harmony was just not quite scratchy and flat enough to take Vedder's place. They could do All Night Thing, and that would fulfill the TotD quota and highlight CC's voice without emphasizing the lack of the gritty harmonizing voice.

Still.

I'm counting the days 'til the album is released and a Houston tour date is announced.

On the music front, G mentioned she'd like to see the Family Values show, 'cause Evanescence is one of the headliners. Now, I'd love to see that show. Because KORN share headliner space. (I'd go hide while Amy Lee whined. And plug my ears if they did the unplugged duet version of Freak on a Leash.) But a) I'm sure G'll want to leave after Evanescence and not hear KORN and b) it's at the Woodlands Pavilion. Which is fine. I don't mind getting lawn seats and being hot and muddy and drunk and rowdy, but that's not her speed. She'll want tickets to the covered part of the pavilion, which are spendy, and she's... not really into the rock scene. Just Evanescence. (Remember, the Justin Timberlake vs. RHCP was our last concert deal.) So I don't think she'll really enjoy it. The pleasure/price ratio seems a bit skewed, you know? Plus, I'll be cranky if I feel self-conscious rockin' out while she's eyeing her watch through the KORN set.

ETA: More science headlines. This? Is unfortunate. Beyond unfortunate to just worriesome, sad, and bizarre. I never would have thought to connect the two, although, duh, HPV = virus = always a possibility that it can do its thing in other tissues and cell types.

How sad is it that my first reaction to that article was Well of course the rule doesn't apply to WET foods. But a cookie... ;) Then you just have to weight the chances of illness from bacteria against the illnesses you'll pick up in prison after murdering some poor schmuck because you didn't get your chocolate fix.

Actually, I would have expected the rule to work better on wet foods because where the food meets the floor, the liquid should stay behind with the germs.

Well, that and you can always wash of the balogna much easier than the cookie. And hey, it makes it low salt!

I guess I figured it would depend. Surface tension and all that, right? Would it be enough to that the bacteria could adsorb to it or not?

Yeah, when I really need my chocolate fix, a couple of seconds on the ground might not be such a big deal. Unless it's anywhere near my cats. Then... yeah, no.

I saw the throat cancer news on another site; it makes sense, doesn't it. Too bad.

I had to have a cone biopsy because of precancerous cells about 10 years ago; I never found out if i had HPV. I'd never heard of HPV until a couple of years ago. Anyway, that's a bit OT.

Yeah. But it's weird because I know what viruses are, and somehow there's a disconnect between a normal virus and an oncogenic one in my head.

Your doc probably would have told you if you had HPV. It's a common cause of cancer, but not the only one.

I wish people would get the hang of "times more" vs. "times as much". It can't be a coincidence that the article had figures of 250% and 750%, but said "more", which to me indicate factors of 3.5 and 8.5, which are not as round numbers as 2.5 and 7.5. I bet they meant "as likely", rather than "more likely".

I'm curious to read the actual journal articles and see if similar language is used. The Chief and I had a good laugh, wondering where you'd publish this sort of thing, and what kind of standards are required.
