~ I keep meaning to post about this - seriously, I've thought about it ever since
High Violet dropped - but then something else happens and I forget. And then after ACLfest, where Matt Berninger et al. absolutely killed their set, which was heavy on the creepy songs, I meant to again. But then
life happened.
So. While I'm waiting for my gels to transfer (~250kDa protein, I HATE YOUR SLOW-MOVING SELF SO MUCH RIGHT NOW), I'm being deliberately unproductive, and thought I'd post about it
instead of pondering more of the college AU that is eating my brain.
Was Berninger coming off a bad trip when he wrote the lyrics for some of the songs on
High Violet? I mean,
Terrible Love talks about walking with spiders (which makes me envision a Hagrid/Aragog situation, wrong on so many levels),
Conversation 16, which was hilariously introduced as being about relationships, which obvs listeners must've understood from its discussion of silver cities and cannibalism, is a zombie song (
I was afraid I'd eat your brains), and the lyrics of
Bloodbuzz Ohio mention being followed by a swarm of bees.
Too many horror or sci-fi flicks in your lives, gentlemen?
(Icon relevance: band composition here.)
~ Built To Spill and Five For Fighting BOTH are in my city tonight, and I am at work. THIS IS NOT RIGHT.
But that's OK, because tomorrow night: Bush @ Palladium. And, if I can sweet-talk Aaron into going with, Alice Cooper on Saturday (or the Dallas Stars, since their match is prob'ly not sold out). BRMC are at Tree's Sunday night. The more I think about it, the more that last feels pretty non-negotiable. Especially if I'm the one doing the driving. Sasha (that's the Camry's name; somehow it fits him) needs to learn that drive, even if it isn't made as frequently as the HTX-ATX commute for live music.
~ And the post-ending non sequitur for the evening: the bassline in
Spoonman is fucking amazing. Some songs are classic for a reason.
Why didn't I bring the new copy of SPIN to read during the train-ride today? I could be re-reading the Soundgarden cover article right now.
