A few days back, [livejournal.com profile] redorchids picked these icons when I volunteered for her meme. So. Six icons, six drabbles. Sorry it took me so long.

HG/SS, Potterverse, 265 words )

Jepha/Bob, bandom, 247 words )

Spencer/Brendon, bandom, 127 words )

Patrick/Brendon, bandom, 150 words )

Gabe and Pete, bandom, 178 words )

Ryan gen, bandom, 156 words )

So. You can volunteer for this yourself and I'll pick 6 of your icons, or you can tell me six additional icons that should be drabble fodder for me.

Dear Pete and Gabe,

I love it when you're all, "Pete Wentz really is the only reason we're famous," and "Nono, without Gabe Saporta and Midtown there would be no Fall Out Boy."

Please keep fanboying each other for the rest of this tour. And the rest of my life. On Twitter, at shows, in your blogs.

Love,
Me

+ One more day, and I can haz fangirls and Fall Out Boys and Gabe Saporta in my face. Why, yes, I'm ignoring the fact that 50c is involved in any way.

+ Most of my department is on a scientific retreat. Since I'm not technically a student, post-doc, or faculty, I do not have to go. Thank fuck. I'd be really annoyed about the frowny faces I'd earn for bailing on the Friday portion of the agenda to go to Dallas for the above-mentioned fangirls and Fall Out Boys.

+ Sadly, this does not mean I am alone in lab, as I had hoped. I was really looking forward to cranking the tunes and rocking out, but the Idiot and the Other Post-doc declined to attend the retreat. >:?

+ My latest experiments involve MCF10A cells. They're an immortalized normal mammary epithelial cell line, for comparison to cancerous and cancerous/invasive mammary epithelial cells. I do not like growing them. They are slow to grow, they stick like mad to the culture plates, and they require an assortment of the oddest media additives ever. (Seriously: horse serum? cholera toxin? WTF? How did they figure that shit out, just randomly throw things they found in the freezer into the media and see what made the cells keep growing? I mean, why would you think that human cells would maybe want horse serum to grow? Not an obvious leap, to me.) DNW to keep using them. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to be using them for the foreseeable future, since they form 3-D structures similar to mammary ducts when grown in soft agar, and that's relevant to the breast cancer model we're studying. :(

+ I twittered this, but I'll post it here, too: Saturday is Record Store Day. Every day is a good day to go to an independent music store, but they're giving us EXTRA reasons this weekend: a bunch of in-store appearances. And according to their myspace, Cobra Starship is supposed to be doing one at Cactus Music. They're at 4pm, but there are other performers there all day. I know not all the Texas crew have early entry to the show at the Race Park, but is everyone going to go hang at the venue early to get barrier spots, or are some people going to go to Cactus while others hold a place in line?
asimplechord: (F*ck it)
I was trying to post every day in February, but visiting in-laws in Rockport thwarted me yesterday.

+ We attended the Lamar Volunteer Fire Dept's fundraiser, a Mardi Gras celebration. There was a band, Whiskey Bent Joseph, which looked to be two kids and their dads & friends. Seriously, the drummer boy was maybe fourteen, and the guitarist was possibly sixteen, and the guitarist. OMG, he SANG. He opened his mouth and this VOICE came, singing the blues, and I did a double take. Like, that voice is coming from that kid? And "shred" isn't the right word for blues guitar, but he was AMAZING, and it was so cute to see him look over at his dad, who was sort of fingering the frets of his own guitar, not playing but gesturing, encouraging him.

+ Eric Ronick's opening a studio in LA? With which of the Discos? (*pointedly avoids comparing canyon living to other people who apparently now live in a canyon in LA*)

+ I am not particularly a Singer fan, but sometimes his twitters and blogs just make me want to hug him. Not a creepy I'm-really-into-you kind of a hug, but an everything-will-be-alright kind of hug. He seems so needy. I'm almost embarrassed for him, which makes NO SENSE AT ALL.

+ I had more to say, but I am blanking completely. Gah. More later. Maybe.

ETA:

+ [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not posted a Gabe Saporta picspam to inspire me. :D Seriously, every time I think I'm going to make some progress on my bigbang fic, some new shiny distracts me. This will maybe keep my eyes on the Gabe!shiny.
asimplechord: (glasses)
Today was a long, long day, and although there is a list of stuff I need to do, I'm procrastinating.

By looking through my "glasses/shades" subfolder in my photo files.

99% bandom. No repeats from my last glasses picspam, I hope.

Come a little closer, baby; let me look into your eyes )

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not suggested I add some non-bandom pics, but since this was already so dialup-unfriendly, she made her own post here.

♥ Henry Jenkins' blog posts about gift/shared economies. LJ what?

♥ Gabe Saporta. IDK, guys, I'm listening to Midtown's stuff again, just for the lyrics for characterization purposes, and I don't understand - he out-emo'd Pete Wentz, how does everyone not love him? Why is he always characterized as skeevy and gross?

Speaking of Midtown, does anybody have their split albums? I've got the four full-length ones to trade, if you're interested.

♥ WGN and its rebroadcasts of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Q!

♥ the sweet new out-of-lab office space I will have when we move

DEAR SINGER,

THANK YOU FOR MAKING AT LEAST ONE SCENE IN MY BIG BANG FIC EVEN MORE PLAUSIBLE.

SERIOUSLY, WE MAKE SHIT UP, BUT YOU TRUMP OUR IMAGINATIONS.

LOVE,
ME

P.S. Twittering about it not once but twice? Really?
asimplechord: (*face/palm*)
- Because [livejournal.com profile] why_me_why_not asked for some Bob/Jepha, I have to ask: does Jepha Howard still call Salt Lake home, or has he relocated to LA or some other city?

- Why is there not more discussion of Midtown!Gabe in comparison to Cobra!Gabe? He's so earnest and SERIOUS in his Midtown lyrics, it kills me; he did such a huge volt-face to become the "you people take yourselves and music too seriously" model that he is now.

- Am I the only person who imagines Brendon joining Keltie Colleen and other assorted Rockettes for high kicks during the repeat of the chorus of Behind The Sea?

- Dear Person Who Used The Last of the Transfection Reagent And Put The Empty Box Back In The Fridge: FUCK OFF AND DIE. I'm pretty sure you're also the person who returns empty boxes of what should be sterile Pasteur pipets to the shelf, and who used all the but the last four mL of my acrylamide, Tris buffer, AND Western Works reagent and put the empty bottles back on my bench.

And on that pleasant note, I AM GOING TO LUNCH, SOMEWHERE MY LABMATES CAN'T FIND ME.

FLYING SAUCER, TONIGHT 7PM. $2.75 PINTS. CANNOT WAIT.

1. I need to go back to the Bronze Peacock and somehow get invited to the VIP room. Totally swank. Also, next time a band does a meet and greet there, it would be unbelievably awesome if the bar were actually, you know, OPEN.

2. Ryland Blackinton was the sweetest guy ever when I asked about This Is Ivy League doing any touring (outside the mid-Atlantic), and I was totally not expecting it when he reached out and grabbed me for a big hug when he saw that I brought their CD for him to sign.

3. Nate Novarro is a lying liar. A TINY one. This girl was like, "You're really short!" and he said, "No, I'm 5'10' and change." And uh, no. I was standing right next to him. He was no taller than I am. I was wearing flats. And I am not 5'10".

4. Meh, to Sing It Loud. Actually, the whole time they were on, I was thinking about the Ridiculous Conversation overhead by [livejournal.com profile] notthequiettype on the LHDC tour, and about the fact that Nate and Pat look so much alike they could be twins. Or is that just because they've been hanging out together so long they're starting to mimic mannerisms and share clothes and hairstyles like old married couples do?

5. Hit The Lights sound does not match their pastel paint-splattered set. And I mean that in a good way. Except the mullet the guitarist was sporting does not really need to be encouraged. And, okay, one thing that annoyed me? Hit The Lights, or maybe FTSK, instead of having a tip jar at their merch booth, have a jar where the money donated is being given to a charity to help dig wells and provide clean drinking water for towns in Africa. Which is fine. But the singer, when he was talking about it, said that "HIV and AIDS and malaria all spread in contaminated water" and that clean wells would prevent this.

Uh. No. Neither of those diseases are carried by water. HIV/AIDS is body-fluid only. Malaria is a parasite carried by mosquitoes, and you have to be bitten by said mosquitoes to be infected. NOT WATER-BORNE AT ALL. Cholera, dysentery, typhoid, all water-borne.

6. Forever The Sickest Kids threw down the best performance I've seen by them yet.

7. Gabe Saporta's voice is *rough*. Cobra Starship put on a very entertaining show (and the Diamond Girl medley was sweet!), but it was definitely not the best performance I've seen by them. [As an aside, when Gabe thanked TAI and GCH for making Bring It (Snakes On A Plane) and starting the whole Cobra thing, was there a reason he didn't mention the non-FBR bands who contributed, The Sounds and The All-American Rejects?]

8. I only gave one concert call and didn't take any photos because I was all the way at the barrier in front of Ryland Blackinton, and the crush was so ridiculous that I had a hard time getting my hand into my pocket to get the phone out, and I was afraid if I took the camera out, I'd never get it back and I'd have to hold it the whole show. Sorry. :(
