I totally judge ppl on what they read and/or listen to

It's hypocritical and crazy, right? Because it's not like fanfic and pop-punk are ~so cool~.

But here, a snippet of last night's conversation.



Supermassive Black Hole comes up on shuffle.

Me: Oh, good song!

Hostess: Yes, I really like it. It's the best song from Twilight.

Me: ...

Me: Uh, this actually came out on one of Muse's albums a couple of years before the movie.

Hostess: Really? I didn't know that, I don't think I have any of their other songs.

Me: Muse? The band you were excited to see when they open for U2?

Hostess: Ohhh! Really? I didn't realize.


There was significant discussion of Twilight (there is a teenage girl in the household, and she insists that it's the BEST SERIES EVER) and Eregon.

There was also significant mental facepalming on my part.

dude, you have to admit, you ARE the type of person who is just musically too-cool-for-the-room for at least 70% of the rooms you might find yourself in. :)

The thing is I normally think that people like what they like, and there's no reason be ashamed because you like something that's popular, rather than being all indie. I mean, I like ridiculous 80s/90s hair bands as much as I like The Decemberists and Elvis Costello. I didn't listen to NSYNC or much in the way of Britney Spears, but if that's the type of music people like, that's fine. But the fact that she didn't know it was by a band she'd purported to be excited to see, and thought that it was recorded/written specifically for Twilight (which, okay, I haven't actually read past the first few pages) was just ridiculous.

I need to force myself to read it, just so I can make fun of it. But every adult I know who has read it gives it a thumbs down, and when I first tried, I couldn't get past the first few pages.
