After the Patriot Act was passed my public library in a largely conservative town, posted signs at every check in terminal alerting people to the fact that any person coming into the library and identifying themselves as a police officer or government official, even without a search warrant, would be allowed to access their borrowing information including the list of books they currently had checked out.
We don't keep lists of previously borrowed books, so that information wouldn't be available, but by law they would still be allowed to ask for it.
