I seriously think that it's a language problem. When we speak to him, he nods and says yes no matter what we're telling him. It's like that's the automatic default, whether or not he has any clue what's being said. We have a new post-doc (a real post-doc, this time) who is also Chinese but who speaks English very well, and who speaks to him in Chinese. I'm hoping that will make communication a bit easier.
I feel bad, because it's like the only time I talk to him, I get irritated because he's doing something he shouldn't or we're talking at each other without getting our points across.
