No, really. Brendon's a sea otter. He was born at Prince William Sound, but one day when he was up the river (he knew he wasn't supposed to stray that far from the den, but seriously, the seagulls were taunting him with tales of "upstream") something really gross came ashore, and his whole family died. He got some of the sticky black stuff on his coat, and it was hard for him to keep warm, and everything tasted bad for a while, but some humans helped him.
