• Courtesy of J, MD Court of Appeals' decision regarding denial of marriage licenses to same sex couples. Bastards. Here's the AP article, if you want less legalese.

I expect this in TX. Not in MD.

• Paul Cartledge rocks. From Thermopylae: The Battle That Changed the World:

...there was almost certainly never much doubt in Xerxes's mind that the conquest of mainland Greece was unfinished family business and a top priority for imperial action. If that motive of revenge recently weighed (as it surely did) with an elected President of the non-monarchical, democratic United States, how much more so will it have weighed with an absolute monarch motivated by personal as well as imperial considerations fo revenge, security and prestige.

Except, really, the US is imperial, although most Americans probably don't recognize it. And there were economically-oriented imperial considerations, which Alan Greenspan has come out and said, even if the Shrub continues to deny it. Seriously. If Iraq's #1 export were artichokes? You can't tell me you think we'd have >100K soldiers there. Plus... non-monarchical? If Hilary happens to be elected in 2008, we will have had >20 years of Clinton/Bush rule when she starts her first term. Familial, if not monarchical.

• I cannot wait to be done with this week's work. If I go to develop a Western ONE MORE TIME and find an empty bottle of working reagent, I'll scream. And we won't talk about the 10% gels someone poured that weren't really 10% gels. And were half the height they should have been. Let's just say that my samples spent a great deal of time "stacking" and not so much "resolving". So I'm taking apart the other (nine) unused gels, making more, and starting over again.

Are your labmates IDIOTS? Aren't they constantly stealing your reagents?

I say one time you hide them when they're not looking!

Argh...

This is frustrating, infuriating and depressing.

Thanks for sharing it. :/

It's mainly just one person who does it. We've had words. And in this case, it's a lab stock solution, not exclusively mine. In theory, basic lab courtesy dictates that whoever uses the last of it should make more. But in practice, whenever he uses it, if there's even 1mL left (we need 20mL per experiment), he puts the bottle back in the fridge.

It is. I had a hard time wading through the legal bull along with my disappointment. But J told me that if I can get through to the dissenting opinions, they hold interesting information. Raker's starts on page 113 and Battaglia's is attached afterwards, at abot pg. 155 or so.
