Except I think maybe Nate needs to be Frodo, with Mike Wynn as Samwise, and Stafford and Christensen as Merry and Pippin. But then idk where to put everyone else, haha.

I... cannot in good conscience make Nate a cocker spaniel. Because Brad has to be a Siberian husky or a malamute, and the idea of that paired with a cocker is too ridiculous. What breed wouldn't be a cliche? I'm leaning toward Rhodesian Ridgeback, trying not to resort to a Lab or Retriever.

Brad has to be a MUTT b/c he's TRAMP! And b/c Ray is telling this story, and he'll take any opportunity to insult Brad's unknown parentage. Nate has to be a purebred though.

He's a STRAY, not necessarily a mutt! But I think he's a wolf/coyote/husky mix, sort of like the dog A's sister has.

this is so not on topic, but I think Dixie may be pregnant, and she's a pretty tiny thing (she's a jack russell mix) and all the dogs around the lake are BIG dogs, so I'm kinda interested to see how the pups turn out if that's the case...

LOL, she'll have puppies that will be bigger than her the very next day.

I needed an extended moment to recover from the visual of Viggo Mortensen and Alexander Skarsgard overlapping. The cheekbones. The chin. The eyes.

OK, maybe I need another moment...

Nate's master is a nice guy. Nate remembers being a puppy in a kennel, and liking the sound of his voice and his firm, gentle hands rubbing Nate's ears. He figured he was pretty lucky when he was taken home, even if he didn't like the crate very much, and his opinion hasn't changed in the ensuing years of cohabitation. He's not dumb - he likes getting into things, but he's not going to chew or pee on stuff if that means he gets no playtime or petting. (There's a spot under his chin that makes Nate rumble with pleasure when it gets scratched. He's not ashamed to admit that he's touchwhore. It's *genetic*. He's bred to be friendly, okay?)

Anyway. His master's mate's pretty cool, too. She's not new - she's been around for a couple of years - but Nate occasionally still looks at her and wonders how she managed to fit herself into their routine.

Which is all well and good until the She-Demon and Her Spawn come to stay.

Nate understands family, okay? He was one of six pups, and he and his siblings fought and scrapped over everything from the squishy toys to who was going to curl under their mom's paw when they napped, but they were his brothers and sisters, and he never would've let anything happen to them. So he understands when the master and mistress allow her sister to stay with them. But she is Evil. And her two cats, Encino Man and Casey, they are the spawn of Satan.

Nate loves the dogpark. Usually he can't wait to get there, to run and play, chasing and catching the frisbee his master and his friends' masters toss. But this day he huddles under the park bench miserably. He didn't get *any* sleep last night, because the cats kept batting a stupid cork around, and every time he objected, it woke Her up, and she scolded him. Nate really doesn't like being scolded. It makes him feel bad, when he's not even the one doing anything, and then he can't sleep or eat, and, yeah, he's just not happy.

"S'up, dog?"

"Hey, Poke."

"Why aren't you out chasin' the ladies? Or your tail?"

It takes all of his energy to explain. Really he just wants to nap; things will look better when he's not so tired and cranky, he is assured.

But when he's done, a voice behind him tells him, "Family on an extended visit? It's just the beginning of the end of life as you know it."

"Brad! What's up, man?" Poke seems pretty excited to talk to such a negative Nancy. Nate supposes he should be polite, so he drags himself to his feet and turns to greet the newcomer.

Only it's not really a *newcomer*. Nate recognizes him - it would be hard not to notice this dog, which must be part husky, given its pale fur, dark ruff, and bright blue eyes, but with a coyote-like grin and sleeker tail - but he hasn't been at the park lately, and when he had, he hadn't deigned to play catch with Nate.

LET ME SAY IT WITH MY CAPSLOCK ON: I LOVE YOU.

Dude. I spent last night browsing photos of different dog breeds, trying to figure out who was what. I am not a dog person. At all. But seriously. Adorable floppy ears and big paws on Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies! Cool blue eyes and fluffy ruffs on Siberian Huskies! Ridiculously groomed poodles! Yappy little Jack Russells (b/c you know that's what Ray is, right?)!

I'm a cat person myself, but I love dogs, too, and looking at cute, little puppies makes me all fluffy inside. XD

And of course Ray would be a Jack Russell. OF COURSE. That makes so much sense.

THIS. In this fandom everything just works, no matter how crazy the idea may seem. This is so awesome. I mean, we've had models, actors, artists, high school students, college students, pimps, dragon slayers, angels, monks, dancers, superheroes, Vikings, vampires and many, many others, and it still works. I have an entire list of AUs I want to write and the speed with which my brain comes up with completely new scenarios scares me a bit, to be honest. XD But it's awesome at the same time. Scary, but awesome. :D
