not to look a gift horse in the mouth or anything, but...

$800 randomly appeared in my bank account between my last statement and checking my balance this afternoon. Payday isn't for another three days. I haven't deposited any checks.

I would like to know the source of this mistake.

Well that'd be nice. Maybe you got a surprise bonus. Or a tax return? Anyway, I hope it's yours to keep!

I hope so too! It's definitely not a tax return - we did our taxes today, and between us our raises last year put us $66 into the next higher tax bracket, so we OWE money this year >:( - but it could maybe be a bonus. Possibly. I'll call the bank Monday morning and see what's up.

that's a rather big mistake on someone's part...

I know, right? I would like it not to be a mistake.

that would be awesome. Maybe it's a bonus. Hazard pay for the lab move.

...I doubt it. We're on a budget. I don't think we can afford it if it'd come out of the NIH grant we're running on right now. Plus, I just got an office, and that's only because my boss totally went to the mat for me, because most other people in my position would just have a desk in lab. But he was like, "No, she's more qualified than a post-doc, she deserves an office" to the dept chair.

Hmmm. Idk then.

did you figure it out? can you look at how it was deposited, and perhaps look @ the check or deposit slip???

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
No, my bank had an automated (useless) teller when I tried today. I'll try to talk to an actual person tomorrow.

Hmm... Do you sell back unused vacation time or get pay for holidays worked in one lump sum? That's an awful round number to be a refund on something. If none of the above, I'm betting someone used a blank deposit slip and messed up their acount number, in which case, the bank will think nothing of pulling the money right back out of there when the mistake is noted.

I figure it's not really mine, so I'm pretending like it's not there until I get an explanation from the bank.
