I listen to Wham! unironically and unapologetically

Seriously. It's one of those cheesy things that I love, and don't talk about.

What? you're asking. (Or maybe you're thinking, Whoa, bad taste.)

This confession stems from an email convo w/ J, related to a blog-post suggesting that a review that says "I think this isn't a good book" does not necessarily mean "I think you are stupid", but is often interpreted to. It shouldn't, though, because we all like different stuff, the good, the bad, the ugly, the really really cheesy. So we started listing stuff we like that is perhaps not culturally high-brow.

I like fanfiction more than regular fiction most days, so that's first on my list.

What do you like/enjoy/remember fondly that's cheesy or dorky or silly? TELL ME!

My list (will be edited as I think of them):

Wham!
M*A*S*H
My So-Called Life
General Hospital (back when Jack Wagner was on it)
Batman, the tv series
Star Trek
Melrose Place (don't try to tell me none of you ever watched it in horrified fascination; it was like a slutty train wreck waiting to happen)
Extreme (shut up; Nuno Bettencourt's acoustic guitar was awesome live)
BonJovi (don't EVEN look at me like that; Jersey bands rock!)
DefLeppard (I was addicted to hair bands in high school and college. WHAT? They did some good live shows too!)

I'm trying to think of something wonderfully cheesy to put on a list of my own. But can I just say "Wake Me Up Before you Go-Go" is just about the most brilliant song ever. Also, General Hospital AFTER Jack Wagner... not much worth the effort. But who could resist the rookie cop?

So, I'm told that Felicia is back, although Frisco is not. What's the point, I ask?

My cheesy list is:
1. I have gone from a compulsive book reader to a compulsive fanfic reader. (It has been over 2 months since I read an actual book)
2. I own that freaking Eamon CD it was an impulse by that hunts me every time I open my CD case.
3. I have been searching the internet and bargain store for a DVD for "The Jetson's" movie and no one seems to have a clue about it.

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
OH! The Jetsons! Loved them. And the Flintstones. :D

Melrose Place (don't try to tell me none of you ever watched it in horrified fascination; it was like a slutty train wreck waiting to happen)

I've honestly never seen an episode. Likewise for Models Inc, Baywatch, Dallas, Dynasty, Knotts Landing and a billion other of those "big" soap things. I consider myself a little lucky. :)

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2008-01-16 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
No? I figure most American people my age had to have watched it or Beverly Hills 90210 at some point. Do you have the equivalent there?

I never really got Models or Baywatch or Dynasty (and seeing the pics makes me shudder in horror over the fashions), but I can remember all of us gathering in the dorm to watch Melrose together before going out, no matter what else we had planned for the night. Plus, at the time I thought it was pretty cool that they had a gay character on a prime-time tv show.

[identity profile] a-carnal-mink.livejournal.com 2008-01-16 04:42 am (UTC)(link)

Oh yeah - 90210. That's another one I've never seen. :)

We don't really need equivalents for them here, due to our televisions being full of American shows. Heh. We certainly have a long tradition of Aussie soaps as well, though, of course... but I avoid those, too. ;D

So how is the WGA strike affecting the tv schedule in Oz? More local things? Or does it work out that most American shows (if they're not specially streamed or whatever) are a half-season or more behind, so that it isn't really noticeable?

[identity profile] fleurdeliser.livejournal.com 2008-01-16 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Jersey bands rock!

Absolutely. *twiddles thumbs*

Hmm...

Friends
Star Trek
Mariah Carey
Afternoon cartoons (Darkwing Duck, The Rescue Rangers, etc.)

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2008-01-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
The Superfriends and the Hall of Justice were totally my favorite. And Scooby Doo.

You mean Springsteen and the E Street Band, right? Or The Misfits? Some other punk band? ;)

Oh, yes. Definitely one of them.

Srsly.

Shut up.

I have to rip this interview (http://austereo.castmetrix.net/podcast/378302368699143951/1/MyChemicalRomance.mp3) that Mikey and Frank did while they were in Australia. It's AWESOME in how dorky and comic-book geeky they are, and I totally picture Frank grinning like he does in your icon when I listen to it.

[identity profile] fleurdeliser.livejournal.com 2008-01-16 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
They are the dorkiest bunch of dorks to ever dork. I LOVE IT. There's a pic of them playing Magic and looking all enthralled with it that is just about the most ridiculous and excellent thing ever.

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2008-01-16 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
I heart Frank so much it's not even funny. Because, yeah, have you checked out the Skeleton Crew website lately? He gave his fans homework. Which included reading Gandhi's autobiography, and doing something nice for someone else, like a Pay It Forward thing. Plus, he calls himself a fanboy. He gets the fandom thing.

He is just too adorable for words. And has the best giggle in the entire world.

A. I don't think M.A.S.H. is cheesy or dorky or anything other than FABULOUS! :D

B. I like Dawson's Creek. ;)
C. And The New Kids on the Block.

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2008-01-16 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I had the world's biggest crush on Alan Alda in his Hawkeye persona. I just loved the sarcastic, ironic humor.

Dawson's Creek is a show I never really watched, but sorta wish I had. Because lots of those young actors went on to other things. Plus, teen drama! :)

Hee, the boyband before NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. Why don't they get the same love that the other pop-boys get, I wonder?

I really enjoyed Dawson's Creek, despite the cracktastic storylines ;).

I don't know why they don't get the love, but they were the first thing I got so excited about I couldn't breathe ;)
