morning miscellany

• Callus ≠ callous. One is a noun, the other an adjective. They are not interchangeable, no matter what people seem to think.

• MrIris's grandma is ten kinds of awesome. She's a Democrat in a very Red part of Iowa, and as such she is inundated with calls and info and requests for cottage-meetings for campaigning candidates during the election season. Her comment about John Edwards? "He has really nice buns. I kept staring at his jeans, the whole time we spoke." That doesn't mean she favors him, though.

• John Cusack on A&E this AM. Yum.

• Talk to me about earlobe stretching/gauges. I got into a discussion with a barista (baristo? is there a difference between masculine and feminine? plural is baristi, isn't it?) the other day about his gauges, about how long it took him to work up to his (his next stretch will up to the 10mm size), and how he'd gone too big to begin with and messed up his ears, and then one of his friends came in, and his gauges that were HUGE, like the size of quarters, and he wore eyelets because the solid gauges were too heavy. Gauges that big make me think ouch, not ooh, cool. So, would you go that big?

I love John Cusack. Even if he is like my mom's age...

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I love his 80's movies the most. But I also just like him because he's not the shiny, pretty guy like Brad Pitt, but he's still cute and funny and smart. And he gives awesome interviews.

[identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the 80s movies too. Mom and I watch them on the weekends (when we can get the tv off Spongebob) b/c you can always find one on and they're usually something we can agree on watching.

What are you up to today?

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Christmas cards. If I get enough of them addressed and finish my fest fic (which is languishing b/c I have a hard time writing Snape just now) I can write Mikey/Alicia. Which really means that probably when I finish the cards, I'll stare at the half-written fic, then I'll switch to Mikey and Alicia. :D

[identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear, half my Christmas cards are going to be late.

I was supposed to be working on my fluffandfold last night & ended up writing vampire!Gabe instead. Crys is evil.

I have no objections to you switching to write Mikey/Alicia. I started rereading DH last night. And I could never write Snape.

Harley watched LotMS last night & said she wanted F to help B dye his hair pink b/c Ry said no. So I was thinking maybe there needs to be a ficlet set right before the boys go home for the holidays where B & F dye their hair red & green for Christmas. And then the kidnapping fic could be from Gabe's NYE party (which also is in celebration of Bob's Bday!).

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be awesome. And totally something B and F would do. And it would piss Ry off even more that F helped B after Ry specifically didn't help B. (RyRo can be a pissy bitch when he's feeling threatened. Or protective. Or a mix of both.) Hmm, Bob's birthday. What do F&B get him? Greta? Something really good, something that distracts him enough for Gabe's evil plan to work.

Aww, Bob/Greta! Um, if he's getting a present for distraction, I'd say that'd probably come from Gabe. :P Besides, Gabe's the kinda guy that would give a real live human being for a present. idk what they'll get him. hmmm.

I was just over at [livejournal.com profile] trackscovered's lj and she was saying she went to a bday party last night & her friend had named it Brentstock & had tshirts made. Now I want Gabe to have tshirts made for his NYE party.

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd have "cobra" on them somewhere. And he'd totally want everyone to put them on so he could see them half-naked.

It wouldn't have to be for deliberate distraction, just, you know, distraction would be a side-effect. B&F think Bob needs more than a random hook-up every once in a while, and Greta's had this secret thing for him since he helped w/ the sound at one of THS's early gigs in Chicago. She just figured she was too young for Bob to notice her. :D

[identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
YES!

And oh, ok. *g* B&F do a good job of looking our for Bob. Bob's gonna be all quiet and she's gonna be all sweet and F is gonna have to keep hold of the back of Bren's tshirt to keep him from going over to hear what they're saying.

oh, also! I want a ficlet (I'm just saying I want it, not asking for you to write it, I may do it myself) where Patrick wakes up and there's mistletoe hanging everywhere so he keeps getting kissed and everyone else thinks its all in good fun but he knows it's Pete, especially after he sees Pete outside with a sprig of mistletoe in his hand (Pete's kinda a kiss-whore) and so Patrick goes to crawl back in bed where it's safe. Until Pete shows up, of course. And for Pete, the mistletoe is just a way to trick Patrick into letting Pete kiss him, b/c he really really wants to.

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Frank will find a way to keep Bdon occupied, I'm sure. ;) Bob almost wishes that F let B come over, because it's one think to casually charm a random girl at a bar or club (because even though he hates it sometimes, he knows that being Bob Bryar of My Chemical Romance lends to his appeal) but Greta is something else entirely. She's talented and hot and young and she's looking at him with a mix of interest and heat in her eyes, but she's not being worshipful about MCR, she's asking about soundboards and setups.

Not many cards addressed the last few minutes.

[identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
hopefully you got some cards addressed while I was gone

Frank doesn't get to keep Bdon occupied the way he would like, though, b/c Ryan is hovering over them, pouting b/c of a snowstorm that kept Keltie away and now he's the only one spending NYE alone and it's not fair b/c his best friend has abandoned him for Jon & Cassie, and he can't even go complaining to Pete b/c Pete and Patrick have spent the last two days locked away from the others except for that call to Andy asking him to bring them takeout and another box of condoms.

Oh Bob. I don't even know what to say to that.

omg, I need to finish my Sam/Jess!!

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
:D I did. But now I'm out of stamps, so I can't do any more cards, so I'm slacking.

*peeks at Snape-fic*

*opens writing notebook with other scribbles*

Poor Ryan. Keltie's really really sorry, because she hasn't seen Ryan in a while. And she was really hoping to catch up with Cassie too.

Um, did Patrick forgive Pete for the "my Patrick" and the big pillow fight and the draping-himself-all-over-him? Because he seemed kinda annoyed at Pete then. And he hates it when Pete's all possessive, since Pete fucks around so much.

[identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
poor Snarry doesn't want to get written. :P

Keltie can't be as sorry as Ryan is. He knows he's intruding on B&F's time together, but he figures it's only fair since F stole his other best friend, and he's not even part of their band so it's not as easily forgivable as Jon stealing Spence. Plus, Gabe keep filling Brendon's glass up with something ridiculously sweet and alcoholic and Ryan feels obligated to keep stealing sips because Bren obviously doesn't want it. But watching Bob and Greta flirt is a little amusing, he must admit.

Patrick did forgive him, after the misteltoe thing and Pete's declaration that the love between him and Patrick is Epic and True. He probably doesn't want Pete being all possessive, but he's going to give Pete the chance to prove himself, and if a weekend of non-stop sex is what he gets to kick that off, he's not complaining.

Mmm, I love John Cusack.

Is red associated with D or R? Not sure ... here red is Liberal & blue is Conservative. Nice buns? Go Grandma!

Pierced ears, yes... anything bigger than that, no way. It just looks painful, you know?

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Red is Republican here. Iowa usually votes Republican, with a small concentration of liberal Democrats in the south-east. His family lives in the far northwest part of the state, which is extremely conservative, and his grandma and mom are very active in the local Democratic party activities.

Hee, when she met John Kerry in 2004, she couldn't say enough about how nice he was, and how personable, and she didn't understand why he came off as so stiff and unapproachable on TV. And handsome. She kept saying that he had the same type of charm as JFK.

[identity profile] fleurdeliser.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No. No, no, no. I would not go that big. And not because of the pain involved. Mostly because when I'm 80, either I will have dangly weird bits for ears, or look ridiculous with gauges in.

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I wondered about that. Because it's not like that flesh stretches back, does it? I have the same thoughts about my tattoos, actually, and that's why I get them in places that don't change much. Because, seriously, one of my friends in grad school got one around her bellybutton. Cute, and sorta hot when she wore a short shirt and jeans low on her hips. But when she was hugely pregnant? NOT SO CUTE. So I can imagine how ink on my belly or on a breast would look when it's gotten saggy or wrinkly later in life. Ick.

[identity profile] fleurdeliser.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. At the very least, if/when I get a tattoo, I'm not getting one where it can be seen at any rate.

[identity profile] why-me-why-not.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My friend Steph has a dragon tattoo on her belly and through her first 2 pregnancies it wasn't bad, but with her third she had to have a c-section & the incision was over part of her tattoo & now it's crooked.

Also, I'm too chicken to get a tattoo or piercing at all. I had my ears pierced once but I quit wearing earrings when I worked in the call center.

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That would totally suck, because that shit's permanent. I'd be pissed.

I had three sets of ear piercings, but the third set was never healed well, and when I stopped wearing earrings because the holes were infected, they closed completely. I'd love to get my eyebrow pierced, have wanted to since I was about 16, but first my mom hated it and wouldn't let me, and I couldn't afford it when I was a poor student, and then A hated the idea, so I never got it done.

[identity profile] scotrid.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Callus vs. callous is like mucus vs. mucous.

I like John Cusack too, and so does The_Con_Cept. But of course I wouldn't say "yum". I do think he's managed to stay a good actor but not cocky about it. Identity was great.

My Italian dictionary says the singular "barista" covers both genders, but the plurals are "baristi" (m) and "bariste" (f). Weird.

And I hope MrIris's grandma favors either Kucinich or Edwards. But how could she stare at his backside while they were talking? Must have been in the round.

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-17 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
She actually favors Richardson or Obama or Clinton. Which sorta freaks me out a little, because Obama and Clinton are Republican-Lite IMO, and I can't say why, but Richardson does not fill me with confidence either.

I didn't think to ask about the front/back issue of the jeans, I was so amused when she came out with that declaration. :)

[identity profile] scotrid.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
With Richardson, it's probably (for me, at least) the fact that Melissa Ethereidge was so astounded by his belief that homosexuality is a choice that she said, "Maybe you didn't understand the question..."

[identity profile] asimplechord.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's that. And somehow, I just feel like he's another hanger-on from the Clinton administration. And I'm not really convinced that the "extensive" foreign policy experience that gets touted is really pivotal. At this point, I'd say pretty much anyone else's foreign policy would be better than the Shrub's.
